Oh geez, another one of these threads? 9mm +p JHP is just fine, and even without the +p, it's fine. For anyone that says 9mm doesn't cut it, well, his ignorance tells me that I'd be happy to take them on with a .22lr pistol if if he was breaking into my house.

Apparently you are ignoring the fact that it put all of them on the ground and almost killed Reagan, and for all intents and purposes ended any quality of life Brady has.

And was the impetus of that damned Brady Bill ...

The point being, the mere fact that you are armed will often sway the perp to scram. Further, you will rarely drop someone on the spot unless it is from a nuero incapacitating (Brain, spinal cord) hit or an orthopedic (legs, hip) hit.

Otherwise it will be the noise of the shot that will cause the perps change in direction (Scared), or exsanguination (bleeding out), and that takes a bit.

Yes, bigger is better, but none of them will leave the perp smiling.

            And I also have a 454 casull revolver along with 45acp, 40 S&W, 9mm, 32acp, and 22lr/magnum sidearms.

I am not going to lug around my 454 just because it is the most devastating (I use that for dangerous game hunting/defense),

Nor do I carry my 32acp in CA (no CCW thanks to big brother thinking the subjects of the crown can't be trusted)

I did carry for many years a beretta 9mm and have found it quite reliable. Further I have treated many that have been shot by many varieties of calibers. It all comes down to how bad their luck was.

Kind of like the incident when Reagan was shot.

Good luck for the cop and the other that were shot.

Not so good for Reagan (hemothorax and extensive internal bleed that required lifesaving and immediate surgery - joe public probably would have died - it is good to be the President ...)

And worse for Brady. Well, if he could effectively communicate, I am sure he would say 22short, in many ways, is similar to the 9mm, 45acp, or even 454 casull in that it can very much ruin your day.

You may feel different, but regardless of caliber, I would bet if someone shoots at you, or even points a pistol your way, your advance, like many others, would stop.

so, any other fanboys wanna stray way off the subject and compare who's thingy is bigger? seems like there's a lot of "mine is better than yours" going on here and not as much helpful advisement. that said, I keep a .45 as my HD pistol because it's the one(automatic) I shoot the best, and it fits perfectly in a small biometric safe mounted to my bedframe. I'd prefer the shotgun but given the fact that I have two 5 year-olds in the house, not good to have a shotgun lying about. I recently purchased a ruger lc9 because it's a great value, ruger makes great pistols, and it's a great size for carry/concealment. I wouldn't think twice about using as an HD weapon and those who've said it wouldn't be offered absolutely no reason why they think so, which leads me to believe it's most likely some personal preference or uneducated predisposition to disliking affordable, reliable guns instead of ones costing twice as much and having prestigious names. this same tired argument has gone on with vehicles, reloading equipment, shoes, tools, you name it for generations and the plain and simple fact is that what works for one person may not work for another. if you like a certain pistol, read what others that like it say and ignore the haters because everyone has their own reasons and only some will do you any good. hope this helps, and I love my lc9 so suck it to anyone who doesn't like them!

You are right, there is much more to it.

Personally for me, HD consists of

                  Good perimeter lighting and fencing.
                  Locked doors.
                  Dogs,
                  Alarm system
18" 12g pump or 6.8 carbine (condition 2) on each level of my home.
HD pistols at various locations in quicksafes (condition 1) within my home (just to complicate the conversation, there is one of each, 45acp, 40cal, 9mm.
Pocket pistol in my pocket (32acp or .380)

                  And good neighbors

I have other options, but as it stands, that is my security blanket as of this time

Try some Hornady Critical Defense ammo. Designed to work in shorter barreled pistols. Any good hollow point that feeds reliably. 124 gr. is a good bullet weight for the 9mm. Remember front site, front site....that will keep you on target.
This year will go down in history.... Don't want to offend anybody

Yes! In a totally different thread, I talked about how my primary HD tool is my well-trained dog. Motion sensor lights, locked doors, signage, etc. all important. Of course this is a forum about guns, but it does start to seem like folks tunnel vision on their guns and either neglect or don't pay adequate attention to other more important aspects of home defense.

One thing that I find totally impractical and unhelpful are security cameras, but it just might be my own situation/opinion.
