Buy Quality Ammo and practice, practice, practice.

I've been really proficient with Gold Dots 124GR +P with my Glock 19. Runs like a champ. I would love some federal HST 147GR but it's tough to find at the moment. I hear great things about Ranger-T bonded as well.

9mm is a great caliber. However, (take my word for it) you'll want a bigger caliber in about 3-6 months. The reason I still keep my 9mm is because it's Sig P226. The other reason is that I have .40 conversion barrel/slide for it

Corbun is the meanest for 9mm.

A .22 will go through most modern homes

Only if compare apples to oranges, like 9mm +P+ JHP to .40 FMJ.
If you compare ammo from the similar category, the difference will be obvious.

Speaking of the practice. If you want to learn cheap, 22lr is the choice

A very bad comparison , 9MM+P+ is much superior to .40 FMJ, and the equal to most any .40 or .45 round currently on the market today.

I really didn't want to get into this debate, but................

              .

It's a very bad idea to set +P+ against a basic one and pronounce those calibers "similar". Let's compare 9 mm and .40, both in +P+ category. That'll be fair.

No such thing as .40 +P or +P+. Unless you want to call the 10mm a .40, then of course the 10mm is by far superior from a ballistics perspective.

Why is it a "bad" idea to compare the top of the line 9mm to the top of the line .40.

                    .40 is just a short weak 10mm.

You compare super-expensive hand selected hottest 9mm +P+ to regular .40 which is a way cheaper.
You can practice with the cheap 115gr 9mm all day long, but when you have to shoot 147gr +p+ in HD situation, your gun will behave a way differently. Harsher recoil, higher muzzle flip... Without plenty of practice with the HD or similar ammo, you may find yourself in quite an uncomfortable situation.

I haven't even brought up .45 yet. Want to compare ballistics of 45+P 230 to any 9mm +p+?

As I mentioned in my first post, I am not interested in getting into a self defense caliber discussion/argument as it relates to which one is “best”. My personal home defense pistol is a Glock 34 loaded with Winchester T series +P+ 127 gr ammunition. It works for me and I am completely comfortable that it is safe and effective. Others may feel another caliber is best for their use. To each his own.

I also have an 870 with a supply of #4 buck. So if you like we can argue the merits of 00 buck vs #4 buck.

So, this is how I see it.
                        1. Is 9mm appropriate for HD - Yes with the proper ammo selection
                        2. Is 9mm the best handgun round for HD - No
                        3. Is the handgun the best HD solution - No
                        4. Will you be itching for a bigger caliber - Yes

People always get into pissing matches about ammo, and it all devolves into saying Shot Placement is probably the most important thing.

9MM is a great round because you can buy ammo cheap and practice with it. It has really good support from manufacturers so you can find any type of round in different weights.

People recommend Hollow Points for self-defense.

It's an excellent ammo. Super expensive, though

Yep, as I recall it was a bit over $30.00 for a box of 50.

True. The ideal shot kills on the spot, the caliber doesn't really matter. However, the less ideal shot makes some damage only. A bigger hole makes a better chance to damage something vital
