If I do get a python I intend to shoot it like all other handguns I have. I don't think I can spend $2000 on something and not make good use of it. It just seems silly to me. Now I need to find one I like for the price I like.

      Heyyy, Black isn't so bad.

It isn't any ol blu or green, but then again it isn't red either.

As far as Colt's go. Shoot it. They still look every bit as nice AND you get to actually shoot it.

Or to make it perfectly clear,
No matter how pretty the girl, you will never know how sweet she is until you get around the block a few times.

I have a les paul that some say is worth 5k plus,
I play it all the time, belt buckle scratches, dings, whatever. I am not rich enough to just let it sit.
Same as my Vette, and ALL my guns.
I work in emergency medicine and after seeing what I have seen over the years, I use a saying quite often.
"better to wear out, than rust out".
It pertains more to people that do risky stuff and sometimes get hurt vs being overly cautious and just dying without ever really living.

I will say this, I have a couple of times put foul weather synthetic stocks on a couple of my hunting rifles so the fancy schmancy stocks they came with didn't get dinged or warped from foul weather.
      What can I say, I'm a freakin' enigma ...

BTW, I just got a pretty collectible 1911 (1960s Clark Custom Heavy Longslide on a Colt Frame), built by Jim Sr himself.

      First order of business,
      Shoot it.

exactly. My Python is effectively a safe queen, not because I am afraid to shoot it and risk "diminishing" its value, but with so many other choices, it just doesn't make it to the gun case for the ride to the range very often.

Hey its your gun, so you can do what you want with it!!

But I don't get the "Shoot it no matter what" mentality. Would you really take a NIB 1955 Python valued at $15K+++ and shoot it just so you can say "Its a gun its meant to be shot"?

Then after your little range time your gun would have lost half it value!!!!

Or better yet would you let your wife take your 1968 Big Block Corvette to Target to pick up some toilet paper??

Shooter Colts and all other uncollectable guns - shoot them every day (if you can afford the ammo) but some guns truly belong in the safe as works of art, not tools.

JMHO (and let the flaming begin!!! Hahaha)

Ive only taken my 85 4" Blue Python out once. She's a pretty clean example. Just a turn line on the cylinder and one tiny mark on the bluing. Probably a 85-90%er. I bought it as a little investment piece, but I planned on shooting it every now and then. I have several Smith's and a Ruger I can shoot to hold me over on my wheelguns . Matter of fact I only own one bottom feeder :P haha

Some of the people here would have you drag your new Les Baer to the range behind your truck so it'll have "character."
"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

I shoot my Python maybe once a year or less depending if I get around to it. But it's mainly a collector piece.

A couple of Python owners I spoke to say I only shoot it once or twice a year. So how often do you shoot your Python? Is the gun a shooter or more of a collector's piece?

I totally disagree-if Colt ever does a new release, the original Pythons will continue to rise in price because they were hand fitted to exacting tolerances and royal blued (research that process) or BSTS to perfection-to do that in today's marketplace would price a Python "II" way over the budget of most revolver buyers. The skilled craftsmen are gone-the CNC and laser machines are here. Example for one: The Ford Thunderbird.

I'm fortunate to have several so I have one 4" that I've modified and shoot whenever I like, one like new 6" and a l.n.i.b. 4".

One thing to remember though is that some parts for Pythons are very difficult to find and no longer produced by Colt or anyone else.
"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
"What we get away with isn't usually the same as what's good for us"
"An extended slide stop is the second most useless part you can put on a 1911"

"While Ruger DA revolvers may be built like a tank, they have the aesthetics of one also,
although I suppose there are a few tanks which I owe an apology to for that remark"

Mine is well experienced just like me - once pretty and now rugged, yet true to the task, and smoke 'n hot!

                              Shoot'm if you got'm. Oh ya it's, smoke'm if ya got'm...

Just as others have said, I've accumulated enough guns that are shooters where i want to maintain the value of my Colts especially that they are still in like new in original box. If they were beaten, then I'd shoot them frequently.
