Also, since I'm NOT storing a round in chamber for safety, then I have to rack the slide to load one up.

There are as many different ways to store a HD gun as there are people. Saying one way is better than any other is kind of silly. Just because it works for you and your situation, doesn't mean it will work for everyone.

They say practice makes perfect, but practice without stress leads to failures. I've seen it, and had it happen to me. Even simple tasks become difficult when you add stress to the mix, and your mind is processing multiple things at once. There is no way to predict how your mind is going to react to that one thing that makes you go into condition red, especially from condition white.

No round in chamber, fully loaded mag, safety on, and decocked hammer. My motion of when I pull it up is to release safety, cock, and I'm good to go.

The way I practice is that as I'm bringing the gun up to ready with my left hand (right-handed) I'm doing all this before I get it into grip. Slide safety off with right thumb, left hand racks slide on raise and slips around right hand.

Now, the downside: I'm now in SA (PX4 storm) so I have to be damn sure at what I'm pointing at, and remember to practice trigger discipline.
I was keeping mine with no safety on, none in chamber and just rack and good to go. But safety on too? That seems like your just beggin' for trouble if your in a pinch.

Your way just seems overkill IMO. You might as well have the magazine and ammo locked up in a safe in the opposite end of the house.

Safety mechanism can fail. Ok, I agree.

            But

Racking a slide to chamber a round can also fail.

            So

To mitigate these risks of failure, would we want to leave the HD firearm in the condition that a round is chambered and with no safety?

No you could either chamber a round and leave the safety on.

              or

Have the safety off, without one in the chamber.

I don't think I'm at the level to have one in the round with safety off, just a lil scary. Or to have one in the chamber, safety off, fully cocked and ready to rock.

So it appears that the condition that people leave their HD guns in is purely subjective. Everyones level of comfort is going to different, thats for sure. So in the end, keep your pistol in whatever condition you feel comfortable with and make sure you practice/train accordingly. There is no right or wrong way....just whichever method works best for you.

I still find it difficult to believe that, when something goes bump in the night and you are in the middle of REM sleep, you will be aware enough to rack the slide when going for your gun. To each their own, but I believe this puts you in unnecessary danger.

I keep my Sigs in condition 2 for this reason. There is no way I'm going to ID with a 10lb trigger pull and I don't have to rack the slide. Plus I get an extra round out of the config.

My nightstand gun is striker fired, so i keep it with a round in the chamber at all times. I dont think i would remember to rack the slide under duress.

At the academy last year we had a recruit using a sig not decock and it resulted in a negligent discharge straight down his leg and he is still down for the count. He was rushing and skipped the CRUCIAL decock step with a DA/SA gun and then like an idiot ruined the next few years of his life because he was trying to be fast and not safe.

Don't be dumb, deco king is the safe solution. Do it, or risk this happening to you.

So you keep one in the chamber with the safety on, or off?

Have you ever seen a gun go off all by itself, because it had a round in the chamber? I haven't. I've been around guns for more than 40 years and have yet to see one go off all by itself without human interaction of some type. If someone doesn't have the discipline to pick it up without putting a booger hook on the bang lever, than maybe that person should be rethinking their defensive tools.

Agreed. However, if I want to keep it in the house, the fiance has said she wants some safety to it. She's not anti or even scared of guns, but she also has 2 kids to worry about and I totally get her point.

It's actually a step UP though: used to be a loaded magazine was stored NEXT to the firearm in the safe. Progress I suppose.

Oh so you actually have ammo and your gun in different safes? opposite ends of the house?

Well how about you just say, "yeah sure honey, whatever you want". And then do whats right for you? Females can be so demanding sometimes dont you think?
