Springfield 10-8 Operator

Well, for $2k IMO the whole gun better be hard fit. Thats a hefty markup for a 10-8 rollmark.

I personally think the $2k price tag is more than fair for what you get. Springfield Marine Operators go for roughly $1400 retail. So you are merely paying a $600 markup for the extra attention to detail and "Stamp of Approval"
Everyones opinion on value is different, so you can think completely otherwise if you like.

10-8 Operators are great, definitely not a Pro, but a great semi-custom 1911. I tend to agree that comparing the 2 is an apples to oranges argument. I've fired and handled a 10-8 Operator along with several Pro's and would not put the two in the same ball park together regardless of how many comparisons one can draw between the two. The hard fitment and difference in # of hours spent building each separately, does in fact show and is in fact drastically different.

That's not to discredit the 10-8 Operators at all though, as a limited run pistol commissioned by Hilton Yam, built by the SACS and given the final thumbs up upon inspection by Hilton Yam makes it special and worthy of anybody's safe, holster, or the like. In my opinion, Hilton Yam is one of the foremost authorities on the 1911 today and ranks among the top 10 full-house custom smiths there are or have ever been (despite the fact that he does not build for the public anymore).

I agree it's overpriced in our marketplace, but it has everything I want.

Once had a chance to get one. Another calgunner was first to "I'll take it.". I was second. The seller PM and asked if I was willing to accept his offer...a couple of 100s higher than his original asking price. It was still below my price limit, but I couldn't do it. It wasn't right. Someone already said "I'll take it" and the seller was running an auction type sale.

Professional pistols, Custom Carry pistols, and all Springfield Custom pistols feature oversized frames that are machined to National Match specifications. The slide is hard-fit to the frame, the barrel is hard-fit to the slide, and the bushing is hard-fit to the slide and barrel. The 10-8 pistol lacks hard-fitment of those critical components, which among other things, is what separates the two pistols.

In the case of a Springfield 10-8, Springfield Warren Tactical, or similar limited-run offering, those slides and frames are hand-matched and fit together, not hard-fit. The barrels are drop-in barrels, which are not hard-fit to the slide. I could go on, but the bottom line is, there is in fact a substantial difference between the two.

If you had both pistols in your hand, simply cycling the action would speak volumes about the difference between the two. The lock-up alone is apples and oranges.
