I CCW a Glock 19 and 26. Both are rock solid weapons and are very accurate. If you aren't planning on using it for CCW purposes, I would recommend the 19 mainly because it will serve better as a range/plinking firearm. Don't forget to look at the M&P9's as well. I recommend renting or asking someone to shoot theirs before buying. Goodluck.

If you want something easier for the wife to handle then I wouldn't recommend a compact. Just because it has smaller dimensions doesn't mean it'll be easier to shoot. In fact it's the complete opposite. Get a fullsize gun with smaller/thinner grips like the Ruger SR9 or M&P's. If it's really for yourself I would recommend a Glock G30 since you can use G21 13 round mags if you got them.

I say Glock 19 Gen4.

Glock 19 Gen3 are a hit or miss. I can so say, I have one with Erratic Ejections/Brass to the Face issue. Fixed the issue myself, updated the ejector(9$) and extractor(18$). Worked great today at the range, no issues.

IMO, G19 with the PPQ a close second.

My GF preferred my G19 over my PPQ, she dislikes the amount of take up in the PPQ trigger, also the G19 is easier for her to rack the slide. May be an issue as the OP is looking something for his lady to be able to shoot.

In 9mm we have found the Kahr K9 to meet all our needs works for CCW/Home Def. It's easy to shoot as it's all stainless steel which helps with recoil.. Its as simple a manual of arms as it comes... Smooth DA action is seamless... The K series Kahrs are the best of the Line... IMHO.... I've had nearly all the rest... For us the Kahr K9 is the best... Just one mans opinion worth what ya paid for it..

I agree 100%...I own a MK9 and its accurate and fun to shoot. It slowly but surely became my favorite gun to shoot, with my CZ a close 2nd.

These were NYPD off duty carry weapons for a few years; up until 2011 I think. Something to do with the trigger not meeting the NYPD standards on the newer models, or something like that. That's why they're a bit easier to find now.

Lucky for me I was given my Kahr as a gift from the GF. But all in all, it should be a contender. If weight is an issue, go for the PM9.

Smaller guns are harder to rack and have heavier recoil/muzzle flip. If she has smaller hands I would recommend a single stack vs a double. For a single stack I'd look at a Kahr CW9 double stack G19 or a HK USP9 compact. The USP is a bit pricey, but is the easiest to manipulate of the 3.

Best bet in "buying a gun for my wife" is always letting her try as many options as she can and make the choice herself.

For those with a small hand, I've found that the S&W M&P with the small grip seems to work better than any Glock or the XD. The Ruger SR9/40 also has a fairly small grip but definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea. My wife's gun of choice is a 1911 in 9mm with thin grip panels and I find it a pretty good option too. (9mm 1911s are hard to find in CA however.)

Other operational issues are at least as important as the grip however; compact 9mms tend to have far heavier springs than full-size guns and pulling back the slide can be at the top of the list of challenges facing small men and women.

I don't know why people are obsessed with buying wives/gfs Compact/Subcompact guns for HD weapons.

We all know that compacts aren't pleasant to shoot compared to full size guns....why get her something that she will never shoot.
