Slamming Mags!

Hi all-

Went to the range last weekend and rented a Ruger SR9. Nice little pistol and I really liked the slim-ish grip. Been looking for a nice pistol for the wife (small hands etc).

Anyways, on slamming the mag into the pistol, the slide went forward and put a round in the chamber! I was pretty surprised at this as my Springfield Armory 1911 doesn't do this at all.

Is this a 'normal' occurrence as the guy behind the counter stated? I'm a bit alarmed that this sort of thing would happen, but look to you all for input.

P.S. Another note, when I had the gun on the rubber mat on it's side and the slide was locked back and chamber was empty, no mag, when I moved the pistol on the rubber mat, it caught the slide lock and released the slide. Another OMG surprise moment for me that day. The slide lock is pretty hair trigger-makes for easy releasing, but for a bit of a need for extra caution around that thing.

It's a rental, it has been abused, I have had rental Glocks do the same. People don't treat rentals very well, and that is cause because people just push the slide release instead of pulling the slide back.

Yes, It is normal. I can do this with all my pistols.

My M&P is designed to do that when you load a new mag. The release catching on the mat and releasing is more likely an indication of a worn slide lock.

nothing to worry about. you shouldnt rely on it always but it doesnt hurt.

Yeah, it was pretty surprising at how loose the release felt.

The slide stop on my pistol is so stiff, I can't see how it would let go no matter how hard I slammed it.

I could do it on my ranges 19/17 and liked it..

Can't so it with my 17 for the life of me tho

I was thinking that it may have been inherent in the design of that particular pistol. Now that I know that it's common, I won't sweat it, but be more prepared.

Thank goodness for rules #1-3 (I think). It's always loaded, keep your finger off the trigger and muzzle downrange.

My first Generation HK USP9 does that all the time. For that reason I tend to sling shot to bring back the slide. My HKUS9 compact, which is 10 years more recent, does not have the issue of slamming forward. I think they might have done something to correct this.

More reason to make sure my booger hook is not on the trigger.

So, what kind of solvent do YOU use on that booger hook? Snottes #9? LOL! j/k.

I've managed to do this on my G21 once. It was pretty cool but I wouldn't rely on it in a combat situation.

just tried a ton of times on my G21SF and nothing. Does it need to be a loaded mag?

My new PPQ did it this last weekend. My SR9 does it as well.
