What can be problematic about having too much lube? I like to keep a generous coat of Rem Oil on the exterior to prevent rust. Is this bad?

Lol tell you what, when i put wd-40 on a paper towel as i always do and rub it over my blades, and i see a scratch develop in the acid etched (every single miniscule scratch visible) knife, then i'll stop using it

On the exterior i can't see how it would hurt. When you put alot of oil on the inside it clogs up with gunpowder and residue and gets all cakey inside. Don't want that.

I rented a .22 at the range and I never got it to fire even one round? Why you ask? The barrel was so dirty, the round wouldn't chamber.

I will be at Angeles tomorrow to start my 1000 round challenge without cleaning or lube in between. I expect to put 450 through tomorrow with my generation 2 G17. I will let you giys know how it goes. If I get to 1000 then I will go for 2000.

I do the same after every trip to the range. Seems like a good routine, and it was the way I was taught. A well maintained firearm, as with most things, lasts that much longer.

i only clean guns that shot corrosive ammo right after i shoot them, and luckily theyre very easy to take apart and clean. everything else like my 22 and shotgun, i just wait til im bored to clean.

Cleaning your gun after every range trip is like changing the oil in your car after every commute.

I keep my guns lubed but I don't clean them after every range trip. It's a waste of time.

I'd hardly compare cleaning a gun to a car's oil. Closest i can think of is fuel lines. If they get dirty and clogged up would you clean them or let them be for another 50k miles? A clean gun, slide area, magazine, all that adds to the reliability of the gun. Can your life depend on whether your car has clean or dirty oil, like it might depend on whether you have a clean or clogged up gun?How about your family's life? I change my car oil every 10k or so cus that's all it needs to run efficiently. But a gun is not something i wanna slack off on.

That would be fun to do. I think my local gun range has something similar going on with their rental fleet. You should have seen the XD my buddy rented about a month ago......dirty and well used but no issues whatsoever! That XD had some serious use too!

Okay... So how often do you clean out your car's fuel lines? After every commute? Do you work at JiffyLube hawking the fuel injection cleaning service? Do you really think that something in your gun gets "clogged" after a range trip?

The point is that most self defense guns are capable of functioning perfectly after a couple hundred rounds... just like your car is capable of running reliably after a couple thousand miles without an oil change.

As far as fuel lines i meant something that actually affects the car in a serious way the way a clogged gun is more susceptible to FTF's and such. No one is discounting the fact that today's guns will run after a few hundred rounds. But what happens when it jams when you need it most. After even 100 rounds look down your barrel. Look under the slide. That gunpowder sure isn't making the gun work better.

My philosophy has always been; clean the corrosive Soviet stuff first, if I'm short on time the rest can fit in when I have free time. Usually the .22's get a good cleaning every other trip or so, depending on how much I put through them. Like many have said, as long as you're not taking every nut and bolt out you're not going to hurt it. If all else, just pull the bolt back, run a bore snake through it a few times and call it good till you think it really needs a good cleaning. his all depends on the design too, I would clean a direct impingement AR every time for fear that the next range trip it would get mad at me and not want to cycle. haha I actually looked through the smileys to see if there was one of an AR failure to fire.

That's not gunpowder. It's a little bit of carbon fouling from gunpowder residue. 100 rounds worth of carbon fouling isn't gonna do jack.

On an AR or AK that's a little more than 3 magazines worth of ammo. Don't be so over dramatic.
