As far as parts go, it will always be easier to get parts for an M&P since they are made in America. Springfield imports complete guns from Croatia so they will only have limited spare parts on hand.

I don't know how high you factor reliability into the equation but the M&P has passed numerous law enforcement evaluations across the United States and is nowadays a commonly issued sidearm. I believe LASD just recently approved M&Ps. On the other hand many in the LE community have found the XD unfit for service due to issues such as poor magazine quality, difficulty in unseating a loaded mag and difficulty in operating the slide one-handed if you have small hands. When I took a training class with OCSD, the dept armorer told me to stay away from XDs for duty use.

If you're just looking for a fun range plinker toy, then either one will be suitable.

Pull the trigger on a XD 4" on sale at local retailer chain..
just a layaway cus the 30 day rule..
They have a bi-tone for about a hundred more.

If you get the XD anyway, watch out for that big slide lock lever, it's exactly where your thumb tends to be. Glock has the smallest (as it should be IMO), M&P is not obtrusive.

I've shot both... and yes, this can be a problem for some. It was a problem for me, so that ix-nayed the XD9 for me. Both Glock and M&P slide locks are just out of range of my thumb while shooting. The XD literally sits directly under my strong-hand thumb which is unacceptable.

Also be aware the XD does have a slightly higher bore axis, which may or may not be an issue with you for recoil control, depending on the kind of shooting you do.

If you can find the stainless slide M&P, those are super nice looking. They were a limited run (I think for Cabelas). I think they might be off-roster here though.

These were a Cabela's exclusive in 2009. They do have some limited quantities available in some stores still, apparently. However, they are not on the CA-roster, so you'd have to somehow procure one and then single-shot exempt it via an 07 FFL.

As a personal opinion/aside, I really don't care for the styling and aesthetics (or lack thereof) on the XD or XDM. I like that they have the two-tone style available, but they just made the design of the pistol a bit too busy with lots of whiz-bang cuts and angles. Not my thing.

If you are serious about making the right decision though, you absolutely must shoot the pistols side by side... everything you read here is opinion, no more, no less.

Totally agree on both points. This is why I got rid of my XD40 and got an M&P9. Also I believe the take down lever flipping up for take down is bad design and makes it easy to scratch the slide. Other than that the grip safety is not needed. XDs arent bad guns at all and I still want an XDm.

I have both. I have the full size xd and it fits my hand very well. The m&p9c is more comfortable than the g17 I sold, but not as comfortable as the xd. The xd's trigger does feel more mushy
