1911 or Glock

-John McClaneThat punk pulled a Glock 7 on me. You know what that is? It's a porcelain gun made in Germany. Dosen't show up on your airport X-ray machines, here, and it cost more than you make in a month. -
I have a Kimber TLE and a Glock 19, almost the same situation as yours. If I had to choose which one to get first, I would choose the Glock (which is what I did). And obviously the 9mm is a cheaper round to shoot.
However, after having owned both and shot both guns quite extensively, the 1911 is a much more 'fun' gun to shoot, and also I can shoot it more accurately. The more you handle and shoot a 1911, the more you realize the Glock isn't really up to it's caliber in quality... but then it's not supposed to be. They're 2 different guns for 2 different purposes, and both are great and fun to shoot. If I had to choose 1 to take with me to the range and shoot, it would be the 1911. But if I had to choose 1 for HD use, then it would be my Glock (for a few personal reasons, as others may differ in opinion).Comment

I've always been a 1911 man but you can't deny that Glocks are as reliable as the day is long (okay I'm sure there are some that aren't) and there are tons of parts you can buy for them. While you can't beat a GOOD 1911 trigger you can sure beat a mediocre one.
I haven't tried out the RIA yet but after firing Glocks for the past few months their stock triggers aren't *that* bad. The great thing about Glocks is that you don't need a gunsmith to fit new parts and you can just shoot the hell out of 'em because they're never going to become a collector's item. I doubt the RIA will either.
You can "hot rod" your RIA to become better than the Glock but you'll end up spending LOTS of money. Ultimately, to have a super nice RIA you probably could have bought a box stock Kimber or fully loaded Springfield.
I vote "G17", shoot up as much 9mm as you want and then get the RIA (or other 1911) later.Comment

1911 vs. Glock
First of all, you are trying to compare two completely different types of handgun. And if that were not enough, you are also trying to compare 9mm to .45AUTO. Can anyone say "Apples & Oranges?"......or "BMW & Cadillac?"......... As far as caliber goes, how about "Yellow Jacket vs. Mack Truck?"....So you see it is an invalid comparison, really. Just my .02.
BUT, for the simple fact that the Gen 3's are not going to be here forever (and the fact that the Glock is much easier to "learn" -muscle memory wise-), I would opt for the G-17. Buy a 1911 when you can afford something a 'bit' better (Smith & Wesson is a good starting point, as you can get a great, solid, accurate, reliable pistol for around a grand). And ***flame suit on for the purists that are sure to come*** the external extractor never needs tuning & will never fail you. The F/L guide rod is a good thing, as well.Last edited by supersonic; 01-04-2011, 10:52 AM.
