    1911 vs a bear

    no, im kidding. really.

i actually am just up in the air about a potential purchase in the not too terribly distant future.

i am looking for a hot round in a 1911 platform. im pretty set on a delta elite or kimber, since they have a couple 10mm offerings on the roster. but im also wondering about a .45 super conversion. anybody on the board have both chamberings? im just looking for a magnum-style shooting experience, and a reason to dust off the press and powder thrower. im too lazy as it is, when .223 is so cheap and ive got a boatload of .45acp. also, i understand you can shoot acp out of the super platform, maybe by changing the recoil spring back to factory, but what about these rumors of 40s&w in the 10mm? sounds iffy, but any insight is most appreciated. i see bdsmchs's thread from a couple years ago, but a lot can happen in that time. and im kinda bored.

    anyways, thanks for reading!

You might ask Schlamoo. He's owned a LAR Grizzly .45 Win Mag and a Springfield .45 Super. Maybe he's even owned some a 1911 in 10mm.

im really not a fan of a giant compensator on my pistols. i just want a hotter cartridge, without affecting the pistol itself.

i dont really see the benefit. .45 super is hotter, and im pretty sure the 45acp barrel is usable in a super conversion.

but that new delta elite is really calling to me... its beautiful.

If you won't reload, this is your best bet. Super penetration.

DT used to sell a TC FMJ, I have a lot of them. I loaded the same thing back in the '80's, you can assemble your own hot load with Power Pistol that will do the same thing. Legal according to the Geneva Convention, the pilots out at Lemoore NAS were sneaking them into their pistols. Hope it helped in Gulf I.

Another really good penetrating round is the Hornady 230 Gr +P XTP. The XTP gets criticized for not expanding quickly enough, I agree and carry 230 Gr GHDP on that basis. However, for myself and my Dad in the boonies, I've assembled a BUNCH of 230 gr and 200 gr XTP for pigs/bears in a backup role. I want a hole through and through, after that expansion would be nice as well.

Decide what your priorities are and go from there. Switching to 10mm is a decision to make based on feeling, not on facts. If you're dealing with dangerous game and do not have a GOOD rifle, you are a fool that no handgun will save. Mistaking a pistol for a rifle can be a fatal error.

                      Regards,

In bear country the guides all carry rifles with really big holes.

1911 vs a bear? $100 on the bear please!!! I have not come ftf with a bear but I don't think a 45 1911 would do the job. I don't know if a 44 mag would really do the job!!! Good luck!!
