Best value 1911?

the used kind. i bought my springfield milspec here in the private sale section. the thing with 1911s is that your going to want to have a smith customize it to make it fit your hand. a used pistol lends itself to that perfectly.

the beauty of the platform is its adaptability to different shooters. i would rather customize a previously used pistol that has already depreciated than a brand new perfect one that has not seen any use.

Take a look at the Dan Wesson line - Out of the box semi-custom - For around 1-1.1K you're getting a lot -

Sig XO or GSR are great out of the box;

Oddly, Colt 1911's are very consistent and durable;

I know several happy S&W 1911 owners, but don't own one myself. Yet.

I might be tempted to throw the Taurus 1911, they include so much for the money, but their quality control is very spotty, and their warrranty support is questionable.

Springfield and Kimber are a bit pricey but very consistent;

RIA has very spotty QC - I've seen some that were good, but also some that were just horrible.

Hi fellow gunmen - I recently purchased my first rifle (10/22) and now I am ready to look at handguns. I can see this becoming an expensive hobby, that's why I am researching to see what the experts have to say. It's all subject to style preference, I know, but I want to know which 1911 is the best quality without spending thousands for custom work. It seems to be the best overall, and very nice looking.

Somebody must care because the question what is, was asked.

Don't see anything about a GLOCK, or anything non-1911, in his question. Plus the RIA is about the same price, so your point, while unrequested, is also irrelevent. If you just want to bash 1911's make a new thread.

Back to the topic, I love my RIA tactical, it has been dead nuts reliable for me, and they are inexpensive. I will take it to the range over my GLOCK anyday. Someday I will be picking up another couple 1911's in the higher price range. An old colt for sure, and maybe a nighthawk?

As far as the RIA accuracy goes, has anyone else tried the $20 match grade bushing from Midway? DO IT, it is well worth the money. All the fitting mine required was a bit of grease and hand lapping, basically turned it back and forth with the bushing wrench about 40 times while all covered in high temp bearing grease. It cut the groups off the bench in half.

Back to the topic, I love my RIA tactical, it has been dead nuts reliable for me, and they are inexpensive. I will take it to the range over my GLOCK anyday. Someday I will be picking up another couple 1911's in the higher price range. An old colt for sure, and maybe a nighthawk?

I've also been very happy with my RIA. Don't see myself becoming a fanboy, tho. I bought it because I've always wanted a 1911 & for $1K+? No way. That's WAY outta my "nice to have" range.

$540 OTD? Sure, why not? And I haven't been disappointed.

The one $1K+ 1911 I would really be interested in would be a jen-u-wyne Colt Centennial edition. It would be a "good value" simply because it would begin to appreciate as soon as I walked out the door.

I'd shoot it, tho!

If you can shoot any 45 like this at 21 yds, it's a keeper. Great shooting.
