    Best value 1911?

Hi fellow gunmen - I recently purchased my first rifle (10/22) and now I am ready to look at handguns. I can see this becoming an expensive hobby, that's why I am researching to see what the experts have to say. It's all subject to style preference, I know, but I want to know which 1911 is the best quality without spending thousands for custom work. It seems to be the best overall, and very nice looking.

If you are looking for a shooter to plink with, go with Rock Island Armory.

They have the Tatical Model with the Beaver Tail and the better sights.

They have been getting great reviews and I hear the Customer Support is pretty good.

I am gonna pick up a 9mm 1911 by Rock Island once they are available to us.

I am going with 9mm because I can't afford .45 and that way I can stockpile 1 centerfire pistol ammo

I dont have any firsthand experience with them, but Rock Island 1911 owners swear by them.

Take a look at the Dan Wesson line - Out of the box semi-custom - For around 1-1.1K you're getting a lot -

best value--rock island! like jrara mentions, the tactical is a great deal (minimal marginal cost, great marginal benefit over GI model). the rock island "match" has a fiberoptic front sight and an LPA adjustable rear sight, if you're looking for all that, but costs about 200 more.

not that many ranges have rock islands for rent...but they don't feel very different from most entry-level 1911s.

It must be accurate and less then 600 bucks - I'll have to wait to get into the high grade customs.

                Rock Island fits that.

You might need to call some ranges to see if they have it for rent.

I took my neighbor to Turners on Thurs. to buy his first pistol. They had a limited number of Rock island 4.25" GI 1911's on sale for 399.00. He picked one up, not sure if there are any left but it's worth a shot. Sounds like it's kinda what you're lookin for.

You just gave yourself the best advice. We all love and hate the other guys guns and therefore will tell you what is best for us and not you. Go to a range a few times and shoot a bunch of guns and then make up your mind. You might spend 60 buck or so renting guns, but you are shooting and you won't buy a gun that you hate and try to sell for at least a $60.00 loss.

Thanks for that - so far I am leaning towards a 1911 .45 in GI green.

well, rosterwise, your only choices are the rock island and other armscor (charles daly, high standard) offerings. (you'll be hard-pressed to find a springfield GI for under 600 otd.) and turner's still has the 4.25" commander versions in stock as of yesterday for $399.

Rock Island matches your price point and has a lot of the bells and whistles that would cost you a lot more on bigger name 1911's
I have 2 and they are accurate and reliable
Not match-grade perhaps but a good gun and great value. An excellent starter 1911

I have a RIA/ mid-size (Commander Style)...took it out only twice in the last couple of months and I've got nothing bad to say about it...in fact the stock trigger feels better than a friend's stock Colt, and it shoots point of aim and has a decent group at 10yards. This is the plain jane model...I plan to add/modify it over the next year as my budget and time allows. I've only fed it FMJ/ball ammo with very good reliability...I'll be meeting up with a friend later this month, who is a reloader, and see how it digests his Semi-Wad Cutter style bullets.

But I'm close to being a 'Rock-Head' !! feel free to join the club.

I think you'll be VERY hard pressed to find a (NIB) Dan Wesson, especially the discontinuted PM7 or CBOB, for $1-1.1k now. Dan Wesson has really made a concerted effort to go upmarket with their 1911s and as a result, I don't really think calling them "steals" or "a best value" is too accurate anymore.

I mean, their Valor apparently sells for between $1400-1700 now depending on finish.
