My nightstand rig is a G23 fitted with a TLR-2 with 1 mag in the well and 1 on the side. As a nightstand rig, I do not keep a round in the chamber.

Personally, when awakened from a dead sleep, I want to have a second to assess the situation prior to racking the slide and going hot. The alarm should afford a decent buffer of warning. If the BG is standing over me, it really will not matter if I have a round in the chamber.

I keep my G19 in the night stand at night with no round chambered (kids in the house), and a knife also. Personal preference as I feel more comfortable that way. Once kids move out in a few years, I will most likely start chambering a round at night.

No reason to keep one in the chamber. If the guy is close enough that you can't rack your slide then your probably already %&@#ed.

We have a couple revolvers on the headboard (his & hers), and the G22 with light is a few steps away.

1911 .45 next to me. Full clip of HP with none in the chamber. If a BG keeps coming after I rack it, he's getting racked!

I wake up a little too disoriented at first...so I sleep with it by me...mag loaded and not chambered.

Sig decocked with one in the chamber of course. It is in a gunvault. Time to open and be ready is about 4-5 seconds inc grabbing extra light and mag. First round will be a heavy pull and quite deliberate. SA butter after that. I have a good alarm. When my kids get a little older and are trained, it might live in a custom head board holster at night. Always with one in the pipe.

No point in keeping a gun for SD at your bedside unless there's one in the pipe. IMO

1911s are great. One chambered but not cocked. It's impossible to rack quietly but the hammer is silent and fast. I'm not comfortable leaving a loaded 1911 around. They're sooo touchy.

This is why DA Revolvers make great HD guns. I do not worry about racking the slide or keeping a round in the chamber or whether it will feed my latest JHP's or will I 'limp wrist' it under pressure or will my magazine screw-up, etc.
Another fear with SA semi-autos is how quick the follow-up shot can come with adrenaline making the trigger finger twitch.
The big disadvantages with revolvers is only having 6 in the cylinder (or 7 or 8) and the time it takes to reload. I do keep a couple of speed loaders handy for an extra 12 rounds. Statistically, most HD situations never even require 6 shots.
I am just giving everyone something to think about. By all means, keep the semi-auto handy if that's the one you are most proficient with.

I agree. My wife and I are new to all this and chose a revolver to introduce us to guns for home defence.

With 2 young boys in our house I need to keep our revolver in a gun vault.

I have a 357 revolver in my nightstand loaded and ready for immediate use. I also keep an unchambred semi-auto pistol nearby ready to rack, just in case I have the time.
