I own both the P228 in 9mm and the P229 in .40 S&W. The P228 is lighter than the P229 due to the stamped slide on the P228. It also has a more neutral feel to me than the P229, better balanced. P229 mags in 9mm will work with the P228 as the frames are the same (9mm models) unless you get a P229 with rails.

      Woe! Great info here.

To member- :-) -Very good stuff, thanks for the info.

Me- I have a 90s P228 that is almost 100% condition. I bought it only to collect and its been fired twice by me in 5 years. Total safe queen and I like to fondle her once in awhile.

I love the P228 because it is bold, tough looking and was a service sidearm for a few US LE agencies. Its just rocks.

Add me to the list of 228 lovers. I purchased mine when Turners was selling the police trade-ins and I bought the one with the perfect slide and slight holster wear on the frame. I have a glock 21 and the sig just feels so natural. It isnt that heavy and I purchased a blackhawk check six holster, and It is extremely concealable. I love this pistol!! the only thing that I have found bad was the grip screw holes in the frame are kind of worn out, but I can over look it. P.S. if i try to run a tap through it, would I need to go one size up?

Most Sig Aficionados consider it to be the best balanced 9mm Sig. I'm still waiting for one to come my way and myself for passing on the ones that did when I had the money.

                two points;
a poster said "all steel" in regards to the classic 226 / 228 pistols, maybe it was a typo cause they are sheet metal slides over an aluminum frame.
another says there's no real difference between the 228 and 229 aside from one having a stamped slide vs milled stainless steel. might've forgotten the 228 balances better and is one of the sweetest shooting automatics made.

I have a P220, P6, P226, and 2 P228s. Easily the P228 is naturally the best pointer and the the group. Even though they are all Sigs (the P6, P226, and P228s) are all 9mm, I still find that fitment, balance, etc on the P228 is the best. I would highly recommend the P228 over a P229 in 9mm unless you are going to go the 40 cal route and get a 9mm conversion and 357sig barrels.

I personally like the P228 over all other 9mm Sigs, and I haven't fired a "Duty/Service" type pistol that I shoot more proficiently.

it becomes a pretty boring thread when discussing the "cons" of purchasing a P228.

I assume it is DA/SA which I am not a fan of. I prefer a trigger pull that is consistant from shot to shot. So I would not rely on it for self defense
So many LEOs and military--including the the Secret Service and Navy SEALs--must be wrong then for choosing Sigs with SA/DA. So the P250 is a Glock (it has full DA consistent trigger pull and more like complete caliber and size change) so better but I'll bet you won't even mention that. Somebody has a Glock fetish--yeah they are cheap and they can sell more of them at a better margin, but they are made cheap too which is why they profit more selling them. It's okay, I like getting more firearms in the hands of citizens--it benefits us all so the cheap but reliable GLock Safe Action Pistol is a welcome market segment. A military weapon must be cheap to mass produce in quantities for wars. But let's not choose sides so much that facts get in the way and are then ignored. Let's get along and stay together--The Brady Bunch is out there stalking and waiting.

It is a compact version of an all steel P226, newer SIG slides are stainless. Thus, it is great for CCW due it's lighter weight.

Like all older SIG's: I never experience any FTE, FTF, shot any types of ammo and and no broken parts or replacements from day one.

Also in heavy use in the great series NCIS, and by me, it is one of my favorite if not the favorite! I would pick this all day any day.

A few months ago I picked up one of the Zurich police trade-ins from Turners. The night sights are dead and it ain't as pretty to look at as a new 228, but the insides are nice and sparkly and she shoots like a dream. I am starting to like it as much as my P220, and definitely more than the P6.

The P228 was my third firearm. In a cash crunch and moment of extreme stupidity I sold it to a buddy.

Thank god he's a buddy, a few years later he'd NEVER shot it. I bought it back. I'll never let it go again.

I own 10 handguns, only one, the P228 in 9mm.

It IS the best balanced handgun I've ever owned.

I have 6 preban mags, 13 rounds of 9mm. I could never replace it again.
