I love my P228. I owned many SIGs and the P228 is still my favorite one.

It is a compact version of an all steel P226, newer SIG slides are stainless. Thus, it is great for CCW due it's lighter weight.

Like all older SIG's: I never experience any FTE, FTF, shot any types of ammo and and no broken parts or replacements from day one.

thanks for the feed back / info, i will mention that this sig 228 will come from private party original owner, approx 200 rnd thru, like new also has trigicon sights, and 8 box`s hornady all for less than mention$$ above. thinking strongly on purchase. the only thing is , will it hold it`s value if i decide to trade or sale it later. or would i be better off just to get the 229. decisions ! decision !

great handgun which has become extremely popular with sig fanatics "in the know." this handgun has withstood the test of time; the proof is in the puddin....

It's no comparison. Ask anyone with both and they'd tell you, get the 228. And that sounds like a fantastic gun in great condition. The general consensus over at sigforums is that the 228 was one of the best balanced 9mm's ever made. And I agree, the 228 is a great pistol. IMO it will hold value better than the 229 because the 228 are no longer being made and are better pistols (IMO).

You didn't mention if it was German made. Even if it's not, I'd still get it in a heartbeat.

The 228 is the same thing as a 229, only the P228 was only chambered in 9mm, therefore the slide was stamped. The 229 was given a stronger slide, I think from milling solid block, which made a stronger slide, in order to handle the higher pressure of the .40S&W (and subsequently .357 Sig). There is no other real difference between a P228 and P229. Just chambering and how the slide was made.

I LOVE my P228 to death

Some great info here on 228's. Add me to the list of fans. I think the 228 has the best ergonomics of any pistol I've used.

Just a little extra info: There are a batch of "new" 228's out there for sale - Sig had a surplus supply of unused German folded 228 slides and mated them to newer 229 frames - those sell around $799 - $899 new.

A few months ago, there was a big supply of used 228's that were traded in by the Zurich Police that were selling for $450 - $550, but those had some pretty good wear on the slides and frames.

If you're still on the fence and the 228 is in good condition, you wont regret picking one up.

                        Wikipedia...

                        P228 (M11)

SIG Sauer P228.A compact version of the P226, the P228, is in use with the US military, designated as the M11. Users include the Army CID, Air Force OSI, NCIS, and as a combat zone personal weapon by Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps flight crews.[8]

The P228 has a shorter slide and barrel than the P226. Unlike the P226, the P228 is available only in 9x19mm Parabellum with a 13 round magazine, but can also use P226 15 or 20 round magazines. The P229 is nearly identical to the P228, but it has a one piece solid steel (vs. the P228's stamped carbon steel) slide and is available in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. From a distance, the P228 can be differentiated from the P226 by comparing the trigger guards (the P228's is curved, while the P226's is slightly hooked) and the barrel and slide lengths (the P228's barrel 3.9 in/9.9 cm, thus having a corresponding shorter slide). Also in a side by side comparison the P228 would appear slightly shorter (0.6" shorter) than the P226. The larger capacity P226 magazine can also be employed in the P228 although it extends from the base of the grip. It is also available in the 'Ladies Escort' version with an adapted trigger for women with extra small hands. Manufacture of the P228 was discontinued with the introduction of 9mm chambering in the P229.

In late 2008/2009, SIG Arms imported a limited quantity of German made P228 pistols, but with the more modern P229 railed frame (basically, a P228R). These are said to be US military contract overrun weapons and many have frames marked "US" and "M11" (though these markings are visible, they are etched over for sale to civilians) although no railed M11s are in service with the United States military.[citation needed]

                        Based on all of that....

I assume it is DA/SA which I am not a fan of. I prefer a trigger pull that is consistant from shot to shot. So I would not rely on it for self defense, however it would be a nice addition to a collection if you own a wide variety of guns.

I can't speak to the new generation guns, but the vintage (late 90's) are made well. The standard mags for the 90's guns were 13 rnd mags, so I'm sure yours will be swapped to 10's. There was a slight issue with the slide finish and the heat treating on many of the 90's sigs. What happens is the finish at the muzzle end tends to turn orange. Sig was refinishing the slides at no cost for a time, however, there was no guarantee the discoloration would not return.

If it is a good deal, then go for it. I got 2 P228s and won't sell them unless I really have to.
