I've been thinking about getting a 1911. I was kinda scared about take down and cleaning. The other scary thing is the price ranges.

    Would you trade a USP45 for a 1911?
A gun in your hand is better than a cop on the phone.

BTW, when did the bar get set so low?

Not unless you dislike your USP. No point in trading away something you like.

Stripping a 1911 is not at all difficult. You'll figure it out in a couple minutes and it will be easy from then on. As for price ranges, you'll find you typically get what you pay for. An RIA GI will totally shoot. It just won't have night sights, a beavertail, match trigger, etc. I will in all likelihood get one myself in the next year.
Then another horse PONY came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a huge sword. My kinda guy.

I would keep the USP and just save up for a 1911. Do you have big hands? Does the gun work for you? The USP has the ergonomics of the 1911 with improved magazine capacity (unless you carry the 1911 with 10 round mags.). It is, however, a DA/SA gun. Some advocate that having one consistent trigger pull all the time is best, while others debate that with enough practice, the deficiencies can be overcome.

If finances are tough for you and you're limited to one gun, think about it this way. The 1911 is famous for it's light trigger, single-action simplicity, cock'n'locked carry for fast deployment, slim profile (makes it easy to CCW for larger individuals), low bore height, and ability to be customized to the user. The downsides are being vigilant when it comes to maintenance and oiling, and smaller magazine capacity (moot point in california). USP is a little more reliable, but is double action, has a higher bore height, and is harder to grip for those with smaller hands.
