Seems like a weird Caliber.I would rather have .40 or a 9mm! Isn't it an expensive round ? But if you like it that's all that matters.

The 10mm is one hot round if you are shooting ammo loaded to original specs. I have two 10mm pistols and I actually shot a doe with one.

I kind of wish that the FBI weren't such little girls and could actually handle a mans round. Then there would be no .40 s&w and 10mm would be priced comparable to other popular rounds.

There's a lot of calibers out there that are all but orphaned.
When was the last time you saw .32acp on the shelf?
.45gap seems to be going that way too.

Consider realistic SHTF scenarios (natural disaster)... what calibers (or materials for reloading) are you going to be able to dig up in any remote jungle? NATO, and the "everyday" domestic rounds like .45acp and .40S&W. .357Sig seems to be catching on pretty well as well.

Although it was selected by the FBI for use in the field, their Firearms Training Unit "concluded that its recoil was excessive in terms of training for average agent/police officer competency of use and qualification," and the pistols that chambered it were too large for some small-handed individuals.[4] These issues led to the creation and eventual adoption of a shortened version of the 10 mm that would evolve into what is today the .40 S&W.
            It's a great round... if you're not a girl.

Probably the best all-around handgun round for SD if you can handle the recoil. .40 gets the job done and is a good compromise if you can't.

Unfortunately most factory loads are underpowered for the 10mm's capability. I'm going to see if Freakshow10mm (you think he might be a fan? ) can load me up a case of full powered loads. Just need to find the time and $.

You can get a .40 barrel for the G20 as well for cheaper practice.

Trouble is that recoil was not a factor in the FBI ditching the 10mm. It was politics.

The FBI was training their agents to prep the trigger, which caused excessive wear and ruined the guns. The FBI told S&W to fix it, S&W told the FBI to train their agents properly, the FBI told S&W FU and they haven't bought an S&W pistol since. But they use the .40 S&W cartridge, so go figure.

The 10mm ammunition that the FBI tested against the others in the infamous trials was a handloaded (by one of the agents) 180gr JHP at 975fps. One of the stipulations of the cartridge/gun combination was that it could not recoil more than a GI 1911A1 with GI 230gr ball ammunition. The 10mm was handloaded to duplicate the recoil of that combo, since Norma ammunition was unavailable in the quantities required for the testing.

It is a complete falsehood that recoil played into the demise of the FBI and 10mm relationship. One of the FBI agents whom was physically present during the trials at the academy posts on the S&W forum. Great read. I have a copy of his posts on my old HD that's getting ripped by the geeks. When I get it back I will post it here.

The 10mm FBI load of a 180gr JHP at 950-980fps is identical to the "standard" 40 S&W 180gr load. In fact, the 40 S&W was developed specifically to duplicate these ballistics, which it does.

The FBI never, ever tested full power Norma spec 10mm ammunition.

That being said, I carry my Kimber Pro Carry 10mm commander I built with Fusion slide (ditched the 4" bull barrel slide) as my every day carry gun. My load is a 180gr Gold Dot at 1320fps from a 4.25" barrel (handload). 33 ounces loaded, aluminum frame, over 30,000 rounds. My carry load is 237.6 PF and my IDPA load is 240 FP (200gr @ 1200fps). Hunting load is my custom swaged 245gr JHP at 1000fps (245 PF) or custom cast 225gr SWC at 1100fps (247.5 PF).

Good round, but really pricey. I'd stick with cheaper stuff like fotay or 9mm.

10mm is badass, but a total PITA to find. That's why I'd always stick .40, .45 and 9mm.

I think there's a reason they invented the 40 cal. Not that I'm more of a fan of either....I'll take my 45 any day (as soon as taurus gives me back my magazines...)

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.
