This is a great thread....I was bemoaning that my life has no meaning until I add a 1911 to my collection. (..of course I said the same thing about the SA M1A, since fixed )

I have yet to be impressed with any les baer in any respect. They are like the Colt of "Custom" 1911's way over priced. You pay for the name.

The 1911 is one area of firearms that I have limited hands on experience with.

I usually like to build the collection slow, understand the items then peak with the best.

As I stated I have a Kimber and Springfield TRP Operator. I only wish I would have sprung for a Nighthawk, or Wilson instead. You truly get what you pay for out of some of the top quality 1911's

See, this is where the confusion sets in. You hear so many different opinions on all the different makers.

I think I will stick to my usual MO and start some where then get them all.

From my experience it seems like the old guys recommend Colt and Les Baer. I'm assuming this is because it's what they know and what's been around awhile. You need to do what I did. Find a local shop that actually carries several of these brands in stock so you can do your own comparison as I did. I have been fortunate enough to be able to check out in detail Wilsons, Nighthawks, Dan Wessons, Springfields(Including the infamous TRP PRO), Les Baers, Paras, Sigs, S&W's, Colts, Remington Rand, DGFM, RIA, and many more I'm sure I've already forgotten

Ditto on the Colt. I eyeballed a pair of S&Ws at Bass Pro and became very, very sad...

There's no substitute for a pretty Colt.

for your 1st 1911, i would suggest you get something along the lines of a kimber custom II, springfield loaded, or dan wesson (something in the $800-$1000 range).

i would definitely not suggest jumping straight into the semi-custom and full-custom 1911 market until you have some experience with a 1911 and know what features you like and dislike on a 1911. dropping $1500-$2500+ right off the bat without much prior experience with a 1911 doesnt make too much sense to me.

+1 on Ed Brown... how in the world did I forget to mention them? The smoothest cycling slide I have ever felt was an Ed Brown. This was not by a small margin either. It seriously felt like it was on ball bearings covered in the worlds best lubricant. Almost Magical.

Go with the Colt/springfield 1911 as a base gun to build on.

I must add that Bob Chow and Don Nygord made the best .45s I own too.

bshnt2015 thats poor advice. Building a 1911 will cost far more than buying a 1911 with professionally installed cmoponenty from it's factory

I own a Kimber 3'' and a SA mil-spec. I love both equally. The Kimber is definitely tighter, but if I hear something not right in the middle of the night, I'm grabbing my SA.

I did add a beavertail, commander hammer, hammer strut and pin to my SA.
