    1. Glock 17/19
    2. Springfield XD
    IMO best when considering price...

      Glock17 or Glock19

I find the G17 is more accurate in my hand.

I think these three are a great starting point and it's probably safe to say that most ranges that rent will have these available. I would say start with these three and if nothing tickles your fancy, keep trying other makes/models.

For a really good buy, check out Sig-Sauer for USED 9MM's that are turned in by law enforcement agencies. These guns are critically inspected, new parts installed, tuned up and sold a much reduced price. They carry a warrantee also. I have two of them and both are great shooters.

See what fits you. Try to test a few types at a range.

I love my CZ75 Compact but CZ's can be "spendy".

I also love my M43 Firestar which I have put over 3000 rounds through

I think there are a couple listed for sale here on the forums.

I see Turners with Beretta 92fs, Glocks (17 & 19), Ruger SR9, S&W Sigma. Large variance in prices. What recommendations do you have?

Your best bet is to go to a range that rents firearms and try out a bunch to see what you like best. The second best bet is after you decide to buy as much ammo as you can and take an introductory defensive handgun course.

With that said, the B92, G17, XD9 are all fine firearms. Many new shooters that I have taken to the range prefer the XD9.

If you want to look for affordable 9mm, how about Ruger?
Their P89 and P95 go bang everytime you pull the trigger.

Go and try out as many as you can. I like the full sized Sigs myself. That said, I shot a friends XD and really liked it. Nice trigger, good ergos (for me), and darn accurate.
If you like Glocks, maybe the comp'd model (34?) since you are paper punching only.

Beretta 92fs shoots very accurate, also S&W-M&P9,both affordable and reliable.

                                Thanks

Thanks everyone. Appreciate all the good answers.

I'll be at the range later today trying a few (Mangum in Rancho Cucamonga).

Looks like many good options to go with.
