What the hell...1911

So on Monday a guy opens his icebox, picks up a carton of milk & takes a whiff. Pew - it's spoiled. And he puts it back - figuring "well tomorrow maybe it will smell better"......

So if you didn't like the 1911 the first time, what makes you figure it will be any different this time around? I like my 1911s and think everyone should have 1 or 5 of them, but if you don't like, you don't like.

The only treatment is a collection. Start the next collection with a semi-custom: S&W PC1911, Wilson, Baer, Springer TRP Pro. That's a fully satisfying "fix" that should tide you over for a few months.

I owned an SA 1911 GI for a brief period of time.

Shot it three times. Didn't really care for it. It wasn't as accurate as my USP, and a bit small for my hands.

But now, while looking in the For Sale forum, I want another one.

What gives? Is the 1911 built with crack in the grip that's absorbed via the skin?

When I started shooting I've heard and read how great the 1911 was, thinking I'm more of a modern day shooter I never believed it so I ventured into the CZ, S&W 59 series and Beretta 92 type of pistols. Then I started shooting bullseye and a fellow shooter was wondering why I'm shooting revolvers (586) and a mixture of wondernines. He let me shoot his semi tuned Colt series 70 and that was the start of my love for the 1911. I had to be modern so I jumped right into a custom Caspian in 10mm, then an IAI Javelina, then a Colt 1991 commander, then a couple of Caspians in 38 super, then a custom Para/STI, then a Sig GSR TTT and some more Caspian frames and slides waiting to be built. I have to say that when I got my first 1911 that it was instant love. Its still my favorite gun and jones it when I go to the range and leave her home.

On the topic of 1911 ownership, I will say this: I personally think the whole 1911 thing was much cooler when you could DROS a frame and build one up. That was fun!

...and it also made it so you could incrementally improve your weapon as time went on, sort-of like making payments.

When I was doing that, it was one of the few times me, my Dad, my Brother and my Stepbrothers all came together and bonded around a common interest. We would all go to gun shows, trade parts help each other when assembling our weapons...

It was a great pastime for all of us and I would really like to do it again.

My advice to you would be to get the cheapest, unaltered 1911 you can and build it up from there. You'll learn so much more about the weapon and how it operates. You'll also learn much about yourself as a shooter. You'll see what makes you better, what makes you worse, where you prefer your trigger pull to be set (if you get an adjustable trigger)...

So, the bottom line IMO is this: You'll never hear me talk smack about an $1800 Kimber or a $2000 Les Baer. They're phenomenal weapons but there is something to be said for building your own weapon from the ground up and seeing what it becomes...

The 1911 will remain one of the most popular firearms until either the government takes them away or laser guns become standard. With that said, I will carry anything but a 1911. You may run, but the 1911 crazy will find you.

"Improvement" may be slightly overstated. The original design was pretty damn Great! You may give up just bit of accuracy, but it was as reliable as they come. Most of the newer 1911 designs just tightened things up. Whether that is an improvement or not, in my mind, is debatable.
