    CCW recommendation...

currently on permit is a shield 9mm and Glock 19
Both are great but looking to add a 3rd when it's time to renew
I know there are a lot of options, but I'm hoping to hear some recommendations that fit these criteria:

    1. On CA roster
    2. Price: <$2k
    3. Caliber: any
    4. Metal frame
    5. Action: anything but a revolver*
    6. Size: small or small-ish -- not too much smaller than a shield or not too much larger than a 19. Just generally a "compact" or "subcompact" size. Not too picky but no micro pistols or large guns. Maybe nothing larger than a G17 size. I'm open.
    7. Something that YOU would be okay with carrying

*no, I don't hate revolvers and I understand they are viable carry options. I have several revolvers but don't wish to carry one.

            P239 although discontinued.

It’s a size between the Shield and G19.

Well, you said no micro, but an open slot in your rotation is a Sig P238. Carries in gym shorts (well, some) or jeans back pockets; fits in a sandwich bag. And is even fun to shoot. Although its only a bit smaller than a Shield, in terms of ease of carry, its much smaller.

Or, a good 1911, maybe a commander's or officer's model. All metal, made to carry, good caliber. And fun.

Agree with Tiberius. What you don't have in your current pair is something that is nearly effortless to carry, yet the P238 is more than capable defensive weapon.

By your descriptive preferences, I'd recommend a Springfield Armory EMP 9mm. Very accurate, mine has been flawless, 9 rounds, easy enough to conceal, 1911 characteristics and looks marvelous. It's metal, compact and well under $2k. Has night sights already installed, a great trigger, usually comes with a three magazine package that includes a quality lockable padded case. More pricey than a Shield or Glock but better shooter and better looking. You don't have to spend to get it 'there'.
Sometimes a gun is just a gun.

Even though they were discontinued in 2018, there are several variants of the SIG P239 still listed on the Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale.

When it comes to self-defense you have to see guns brutally honestly as just tools. What is the need that you have that your current selection doesn't satisfy?

I would say that G19 covers your "large carry gun" and that Shield covers your "medium carry gun." They are both polymer, striker, DAO guns, so you're consistent with platforms. What's missing is just a "small carry gun" where the suggestions above about Sig are spot on.

The one thing that "small carry gun" does much better than any other gun is that it fits into your pocket, so you can carry it *all the time*, even when you don't want to dress up with a belt and a larger holster. Personally, I find myself carrying a S&W 360PD (it's a revolver, so I'm not suggesting it) literally *all the time*, to the point that it's like a phone in my pocket. I carry G19 if I go places, but my S&W goes too - if I take the Glock off, S&W goes into my pocket.

Outside pure functionality, you can add a BBQ gun so you can have something to carry when you're more interested in the gun itself than in the self defense. This is where you add a high end 1911 or something of that sort to your license.

P238 is a good option. P938s, though off-roster, are found here fairly regularly in the marketplace. Though polymer; a Kahr PM9 makes a pretty decent 9mm pocket rocket that is on-roster and won't break the bank these days.

                          Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

                            A P238 is a fine pistol.

However, I replaced it on CCW with a Kahr p380, as it is significantly lighter and smaller in nearly every dimension.

A p238 is actually even wider than a 9mm Shield as well.

For me, for pocket carry, the p380 is the sweet spot...

I was told by Oc sheriff when I received my ccw that if I legally acquired high cap mags (freedom week mags) I could carry over 10. So the info u have given is not true in Orange county.
