OP, don't blame yourself too much and I wouldn't blame SA. They have good quality control. That little ding really isn't much of a bother. If your gun is reliable you will have many generations of use out of it. If it doesn't function correctly SA will honor their warranty....... Shoot that nice gun.

I notice they do tend to ship guns with minor defects because they know most people wont go through the trouble of sending it back

I only buy guns in stock that I can hand select, if it was something like a old surplus rifle or sks, I would expect minor dings, or marks like that, but not on a brand new firearm.

Don't blame yourself. It's hard to catch everything at the store. Plus, would you really have declined it if you had caught it prior to DROS? In my opinion, it would not be worth the hassle.

I wasn’t aware you couldn’t refuse a gun you ordered online BEFORE you DROS’d it.

some dealers wont send a gun back, what you see is what you get , if it has a defect or cosmetic flaw, too bad, the dealer already has your money, especially if it's from a hole in the wall type of gun shop or pawn shop, not a large chain store with better return policy and customer service.

I've said it here before, my SA Loaded is cosmetically flawed, but has ran perfectly.

I've felt similar each time I've been held up. Identify the make & model of the firearm whilst giving an ocular pat down to the perp. Karate kick until unconscious. Go home to family.

Yes. YOU dropped your gun. Neither the dealer nor the distributor know what might have happed after you picked up the gun. It was fine when you left, because you accepted it.

Now.

Field strip the gun twice.

The slide dent no longer matters compared to all the other marks you just put on the gun.
