The only CCW pistol I currently covet is the P365.

I have shot/owned/carried most, if not all, of those posted so far. Yes, including a full size 1911.

    I currently list/carry mostly off-roster pistols.

The G43, .45 Shield and the P380 see the most duty.

They reflect the need for dependability and the ease of concealment required living in So CAL's excellent weather...

CCW it's just a pipe dream in Contra Costa County.

If the Sig P365 could be chambered in 40 I’d take that, but since it’s not I’ll stick with the Glock 23 and 27. 135 grain JHPs in a light pistol is very hard to beat for an extended carry. My Colt Commander in 45ACP will be next choice.

Wilson EDC X9 in a free state with standard capacity magazines.

If it were here I'd like to get a Glock 43X but want to pay Blue Label pricing.

I can palm a basketball. I shoot a .40 no noticeably worse than a 9mm. And I do not for a minute believe a 9mm is as effective. As 9mm bullets have gotten better, so have .40s. But if I were participating in a sport then yeah, I would probably pick a 9mm.

I took the time to become proficient with a .40 because with a 10 round limit it made sense to make the ten count. With Freedom week I can understand how that May effect the calculus of many. Though I believe the 9th will put us back to 10.

Moreover, I've not even handled one yet but the Sig 365 looks the most promising to me for CCW. Though that will likely remain a dream until we retire to Wyoming or Montana.

And before everyone gets their britches in a cinch, I am well aware I am in the minority here regarding the 9mm. So I may as well throw out there that I also prefer a .45 over a 9mm. As does my wife. But I shouldn't talk religion on an Internet forum. YMMV!

Obviously I'd carry an Unobtainian 1911.

You'e seen them. Haley Barry used one in John Wick 3. 150+ shots on one mag.

I can put 2 rounds center mass from Concealed just as fast with my 10MM as I can with my .40 and 9mm.

Only real advantage of a 9 is less training time.

OTOH a trained shoot will likely prevail over an untrained one even when the untrained shooter is shooting 9mm

I was just reading about the Wilson EDC X9 and it looks amazing. I have a Glock I think 34. It's obviously too big for EDC but it used to shoot reliably, more recently it jams a lot. Probably because I haven't cleaned it in forever and it's really dry. I haven't taken it out in a long time and I just have to get around to cleaning it and lubing it.
Move across the ridge to Simi and you will be much more likely to achieve your CCW dream. Living in LA county, you're likely effed, irrespective of your statement of good-cause. Good luck none the less.

That said. P365. Small, light, accurate, relatively large capacity. IMO, the most important aspect of a concealed carry gun is whether you will actually carry it. You can chuck a P365 in your short's pocket. My second choice would be a P938. Same reasoning, but only seven rounds.

Disregarding the roster is easy for me. I carried an M&P .40c for a long time and really liked it. Now carrying a P365 12+1, soon to be 15+1 when the new mags arrive. Curious to see how much the extra few rounds effect carrying it.

Urban carry: Springfield Armory EMP 3 9MM. Extremely reliable, lightweight, easy to conceal, ease of sight picture retention, mag capacity, rapid reload, reasonably powerful...alas, I couldn't tell you that last time I've carried a handgun on my person.

Wilderness carry: Springfield Armory TRP .45 ACP. Extremely reliable, ease of carry, muscle memory transfer from urban carry handgun, powerful cartridge, ease of sight picture retention, rapid reload, ease of field stripping, very powerful up to black bears.

                          Best: Avoidance, man or beast.

Addendum: both of my handguns facilitate putting a lot of rounds on a threat in a huge hurry.

If you could have (or have) a CCW, and could carry any gun, irrespective of the roste
The answer depends upon context. What am I doing and what will I be wearing? I may start the day with a Glock 21 and finish pocket carrying a SIG P365. If I hike anywhere remotely “offroad”, the S&W 629 with moderate 44 Magnum loads goes in the holster. Sometimes, only a small 380 is possible. I have found a Glock 26 or Sig P365 tend to be very versatile for urban carry. The Glock 19 or 30, HK P30SK, S&W 686 3”, and Dan Wesson ECO also work great when a shirt need not be tucked in.

Think about things in terms of caliber. 357 Magnum, 44 Special, 9x23, 44 Magnum, 10mm, 45 ACP, and 357 SIG will handle almost all encounters. The magnum cartridges will have better terminal ballistics overall. You could try midrange 45 Super loads that exceed 45 ACP +P. These calibers will help you with barriers and critters. 10mm loaded to its potential is a very versatile round.

9x19mm, 380 Auto, and 38 Special are better for smaller guns where the expected use is against criminals. I carry 9x19mm guns frequently and find them adequate. These calibers do not have the extra power of the heavier calibers in single shots, but do well when combined in bursts.

Personally, I like having at a minimum 44 Magnum, 45 ACP and 9x19mm guns onhand. These calibers cover 99% of everything I typically want to do.

If I were stuck with one gun, I would choose a gun in 45 ACP since 460 Rowland is available. 45 ACP is excellent for most uses and the 10 round capacity limit of California only affects a few guns. I would probably go with a Glock 21 and a 460 Rowland conversion (for hiking).
