Ruger GP100 all day for best bang for the buck.

If you want cheap you may look into a Taurus.

Ruger GP100 about $600, all around 357.
but my GP100 was broken... (at forcing cone)

S&W 586 or 686, around $750-$850, also sure and basic 357.

Cheap is relative. No such thing as a cheap revolver that's worth buying. Sometimes the "cheap" comes out expensive. When a cheap revolver stops working, you'll either try to get rid of it at a loss, or pay to repair it...again & again, as many Taurus owners found out the hard way.

Keep you eyes open in the used case for Hawes Western Marshall 357 if you're looking for SA. They usually sell cheap and are well made.

Have you personally ever owned a Taurus revolver? Most Taurus bashing I find is by people who knew a guy who knew a guy. Or - I read that.....

I've personally owned a Taurus .357 mag revolver for 32 years. I've been nothing but great. No issues - more reliable than my S&W model 10. I also have a Taurus 85.

The big issue with Taurus has been they first polymer semi-autos. My own brother in law had one and it was a jam o matic. Thing with Taurus is some models you want to stay away from, and their quality control isn't as good as some other manufacturers. My Taurus's aren't my go to guns, but they're fine range guns from my years of experience with the half-dozen I own.

To the OP - don't rule out Taurus. You did say "cheap". Check them out and see if you like them.

I’ve owned (but no longer) two Taurus revolvers. I had no issues with either in the 15 years I had them. Just like any gun purchase, look them over real well before you DROS. Charter Arms is usually around the same price range, maybe a few bucks more. Both are cheaper alternatives to the more expensive Ruger or S&W.

This is quite possibly the best thing going for your needs. Price wise they come in less expensive than a Smith, built to last, and smooth operators. I picked one up here on the used handgun board from the ‘70’s. It could have passed for almost new. It’s a great shooter and it looks great.

I've personally owned a Taurus .357 mag revolver for 32 years. I've been nothing but great. No issues - more reliable than my S&W model 10. I also have a Taurus 85.

My first revolver was an '82 (IIRC) vintage 669 I got for $350 OTD. I knew the Taurus rep but figured any problems had already been addressed.

Not a darn thing wrong with it. In it's prime I would say the finish rivaled anything from the big names. Still a beautiful revolver. I now have several S&W but haven't sold the Taurus.
