    Revolver thoughts

I've been on the fence for a couple months about getting a revolver. While I've shot revolvers before, it would be first owning one. While I would really love getting a Python, I really dont think I can swing $3k+ for one.

I have narrowed it down to to a S&W 686 Competitor 6". I cant really say why other than that's what it will likely be. However, today an opportunity has come to purchase a Colt King Cobra for the same price of the S&W. In doing some preliminary research, $1200 seems like quite a fair price to me. However, I know so little about King Cobras. I've inspected the KC and it is in very good condition. He is original owner and suspects less than 500rds. Mostly been a safe queen. Date of Mfg unknown.

So, what are your thoughts? If given the circumstances would you opt for a Colt KC or new S&W Competitor?

Thanks in advance. Ive always appreciated CG'rs insight and opinions.... really

I have no experience with the King Cobra. I had a Colt Anaconda 44 mag, and it was a POS. I would get the S&W before the Colt.

A friend of mine had a Peacekeeper (similar to a King Cobra). In my opinion, it wasn't better than my S&W 586; maybe not even as good.

Two things...get a .357 or a .44 magnum revolver. So you can shoot specials out of them.

        I'd go with a .357 first, then the .44.

Get a S&W revolver. Colt revolvers are junk, always have been. Lousy trigger pulls and fragile internal components.

The only desirable attribute of a Python is the fabled blue finish. Other than that, they cannot compare with a S&W quality or durability.

This is never been stated here before but
          how about you...

          Get Both !

I prefer Smith & Wesson's myself and normally I would recommend that for a first-timer because it's less money for most models are they known for their reliability and better than average customer service if anything happens to your new gun

but if you have the opportunity to get a good deal on a Colt revolver and it looks good to you go for it.

And by that I mean get both.

Most “easy” revolver is GP100 for sure, it’s Glock of revolver

How about something different like a Smython/Rugon.

Smith or Ruger frame with a Python barrel.

Either one would be a great gun. I'd probably opt for the 686 because it is a Performance Center gun and will have an action job that is already great, whereas the KC was kind of a utilitarian gun. Don't get me wrong, the KC is a really nice gun but it won't have the action of the PC S&W unless you send it to someone for work.

That said it might be wiser to go with the Colt since they don't make them anymore and you can always pick up the S&W later. Tough choice but you really can't go wrong either way.

The smith is a great little gun. I'm sure the colt has its strengths, but I honestly prefer a known commodity vs an unknown.

I would get the 686 competitor. I have one; she's a tack driver and the best looker in the safe.

I'd feel guilty turning a nice snake into a shooter. Got a new production 586 for that.

Back then Pythons were really not all that special. They cost about 50 bucks more than a Smith. People want them now because you can't get them.

A King Cobra is really nothing like a Python. But if I were OP I wouldn't get a new smith either. I'd get an older Model 29, pinned and recessed.
