    Desert Eagle? Temptation!

So, I've got the Desert Eagle bug, thinking about this as my next handgun, never handled one, but will when I get to my LGS tomorrow. Who has one, I'm pretty sure I'd be looking to buy used, I think brand new these things are quite expensive.

    Uses:
    -Range Toy
    -Home Defensive via power projection
    -Hand Cannon

Who has one and likes it? Personal experience?

Sad thing is the big ol' Glock 40 is not legal in California. Would be an alternative to the Desert Eagle.

I've shot the 50AE pretty extensively. It's fun as a range toy and for show. It's completely impractical & counterproductive for home defense because of its size, weight, noise, and recoil. If I had to defend myself I'd pick a 380 over the DE any day of the week and I don't really like 380s.

I agree with much of what you say. I think in a home defense setting might work, considering the size would likely be intimidating to intruders. Of course this gun would be definitely impractical as a defensive carry, but for the home... I'd say it's fine, besides I'll have 2 other 9mm guns to work with anyways... so it's not really a problem anyways.

Love my DE, total range toy, but hey not all your guns need to have a "practical" use.

Get it used if you can, some good deals to be had if your patient and keep your eyes peeled.

I recommend you actually go shoot one before rendering your opinion. Rent one at a range if possible, just handling the empty gun won't make what I'm telling you obvious other than weight. Shots on target is what matters in HD. The DE is terrible for that.

But I'm not saying you shouldn't get one. They're iconic and that makes them fun to look at. On a range where people are shooting various calibers, even shotguns, you're going to get a commanding report that gathers attention. Sweet, but that same thunderous noise is going to suck when you're in an HD situation without earpro.

By all means grab one if you like it, but don't delude yourself into thinking it's utilitarian unless you believe Transformers are real & Decepticons might invade your house. Then sure, it'd be a useful tool to have. Beyond this IMO it's a liability, not an asset in home defense. But you should decide that for yourself, after you actually shoot one.

                  PS: nice pictures helix

Love desert eagles. Don't own one, but have shot the .44 and .50 a bit. Both are great. Dream guns for me. One day I will buy the suitcase with all calibers and barrel lengths.

The only Deagle I think would be practical for HD would be an alloy .357(not on the roster). These guns require full power loads to operate, and would be seriously over powered for HD.

As far as shots on target, they are extremely accurate.

I also recommend Rentin and shooting one. I own one a Desert Eagle with 44mag and 50Ae barrels. The first time I took mine to the Range I shot a couple mags of 44mag then switched barrels and mags to 50Ae first round I let go shut down the range . It was lie everyone said Wtf all at the same time . The 44mag is very easy to shoot . The 50 Ae requires a stance much like shooting a shotgun . Lean into it hard . If while shooting the Desert Eagle recoils up or pushes you back you will have cycling issues .
I shoot mine alot I actually like the firearm. Many will say range toy or impractical . I can shoot mine as good as a Revolver in 44mag but faster. Same with 50ae its like shooting anything else except a Glock Will cycle no matter how bad your Stance is . 50AE If we lived in Big Bear or Some other Dangerous animal . I would have no problem using mine as a carry piece..

Heck no, why even post this, when this is about Desert Eagles??? I'll have 2 hand guns by tomorrow anyways.

I really need to put in my signature, "I hate Glocks", to shut the glock fanboys up... *end rant*

Thank you for sharing your experience, I think I will end up doing what you did, get the 44 mag and get the barrel and mags for the 50 AE later.

I got to shoot a DE and I liked it. I believe it was .44 mag. No reason to have it except you just want it

I have one in .44, basic black. I love it, and wouldn't give it up for any reason. Its a hoot to shoot, but... Its a range toy, nothing more. You can do more damage just throwing at someone.

Is it fun to shoot? Hell Yeah!! Is it practical, god no. Its a soft shooter in .44 and good for getting attention. If you have the means, absolutely, however, nothing more than a range toy. A fun one, but nothing more.

The Desert Eagle is an insanely accurate pistol .
