TRP vs. DAN WESSON

TRP's "tactical" and "T R P" engraving on the frame and slide is real turn off. Really gaudy and ugly. I would rather buy CBOB although I wouldn't buy both. I had much issues with previous CBOB I had (went back to factory twice. mine was a lemon and later sold it) but I would still take CBOB over TRP because of those cheesy markings on TRP if I had to make a choice. If you decided to get a CBOB make sure you thoroughly test its reliability (shoot around 1000 rounds). Mine jammed constantly even after 500 "break in period" and later sold it because factory couldn't make the gun reliable enough to trust it.

DW. Never understood what the admiration was with the TRP. I have a stable of 1911's and feel the TRP isn't even in the same fit and finish league as the DW's. I feel performance wise they will be close but the fit and finish will be much better in the DW.

DW actually shoots a lot better out of the box (accuracy wise). TRP is a glorified Loaded with front strap checkering and a rail. Slide/frame has some play to it. Also, rear sight is proprietary, very few people make replacements for it.

But I echo the sentiment of the Les Baer recommendation. Yeah, customer service sucks, but the gun is great. Les Baer allocated 90% of your money to the gun, 5% to customer service, and 5% to keep a 1980s website running.

I prefer the CBOB. Love mine. Had it bead-blasted, and also replaced the MSH, which was too smooth IMO. Replaced it with a more textured MSH.

Had a TRP, but did not like the aggressive front strap checkering, and busy roll marks. Good gun, though.

My wife has a CBOB. Excellent fit/finish and fine SD trigger. She's carrying a Kimber HD Pro Carry II in 9mm for the reduced recoil. I wouldn't hesitate to carry the DW if I had room on my permit, but I've got to have a backup for my primary carry gun (HK P2000) and an EMP for fanny pack. The DW resides in our safe in pristine condition.

Last time I compared brand new TRP to a Specialist I voted Specialist all the way. It had tighter tolerances, but on the other hand it was smoother. The trigger on the DW is better

Commanders are also less reliable than Gov't sized ones.

So, major manufacturers continue to make the Commander model because there is a viable and thriving market for unreliable 1911s?

Dan Wesson anything over Springfield anything (short of custom shop).

Springfield has that odd-ball .220" BTGS radius that makes finding a BTGS that will work for it a pain, and the two I've had (9mm Loaded and Mil Spec) were mediocre at best out of the box. Also got a couple of friends with a few Springfields and they've had the same experience. Loose slide to frame, slide to bushing and bushing to barrel.

Great customer service reputation comes from horrible QC. A lot of guns were sketchy for years. To their credit, they fixed them, but it'd be better if they didn't have to. Now we're all paying for that reputation with their prices. And people sending guns back for nit-picky stuff cause they think they'll get their gun worked over at the shop doesn't help the price inflation.

My frame had to be welded up so that it can accept other grip safeties.

But the slide to frame fit on both MC Operators are okay, even though they are a few years apart in terms of production.

Now my friend's TRP is another story...

Normally it is TRP vs PM7. The CBOB with the bobtail cut is "nicer" for CCW purposes. Currently on the full rail TRP and happy with it. In aroudn the price range, I would consider the PM7 or a Les Baer.

Dan Wesson are very well made 1911s. They use quality parts, none of which are MIM. I don't have a CBOB, I have a PM7 which is a great shooter, the trigger breaks cleaner than the TRP. The TRPs are also good, they DO use MIM parts but I enjoy shooting the TRP full rail a bit more. It's hard to miss with the TRP... almost like cheating.

Man, I'm not sophisticated or clued in enough, because I can't tell much of a difference in the triggers of my Baer, TRP or Wilson.

Not directed to anyone in particular, but some Calgunners talking about triggers is like Eskimos talking about snow.

I currently own a TRP Operator as well as a Dan Wesson Valor. The TRP is a really nice gun no faults with that weapon. But it has nothing on a Dan Wesson. For a production 1911 you can not beat the Dan Wesson.
