First Glock - 19 or 17?

Since I own and shoot both a G43 and G29; I placed a
G19 OD green in jail yesterday. This without having a previous opportunity to shoot one; so I rented one today. It was the right choice for me; but I would rent all before you buy.

A lot of people will recommend a 34 & 19. I say get a 17 & 26.

I thought the 19 was too small and the 34 was not worth the premium, so I went for the 17. I also like the smooth trigger vs ridged.

I am ready to buy my first glock, but I am having a hard time deciding on the 17 or 19 (gen 3 since I'm in CA).

Conceal carry is not a factor. I currently have a Shield, CZ 75b and a P238. So I have a full size and two small barrel guns, so based on that would anyone recommend the 19 over the 17?

Any input would be appreciated.

I have a full size Glock 22 already, but I just had this G17 vs G19 dilemma recently. Actually walked into store ready to get a 17, but ended up going with the 19. Dunno.. just something about the 19 I've always liked.

Plus if we ever get widespread CCW in this state, the G19 might come in handy.

One cool thing I didnt realize is the G19 fits all my fullsize G22 holsters. Even Safariland holsters with fancy retention systems. I guess that's because the difference in dimensions between the guns is just the grip and barrel length.

IMO, skip the G17 in the middle.

This has been my experience as well. I have a 19 and 34, and recently bought a 17. Thought - it's the original Glock size, I should round it out and pick one up. It was a fine shooting gun but after realizing it fell in the middle no-mans-land between my 19 and 34 and that I had no real use for it, I decided to sell. I'm at a point now where I don't need to keep firearms around I don't plan to shoot - for the most part.

There's a reason why your friends are anti-Glock.

But if you must buy a Glock, I highly recommend the Glock 34. It's much easier to shoot accurately vs the G19 or G17. No reason to get a G19 because you already have compact guns and don't ever plan to carry.

I disagree. I do have my carry permit now, but my G19 purchase far pre-dates my carry permit. I'm the kind of guy that just prefers the proportions of compact guns. G19, commander 1911, CZ P-01, etc. That's my preferred size (even with XL hands). In fact, I only ever bought my G34 when I got serious about USPSA, otherwise I would have kept shooting my 19 in competition.

You have a Full Size: CZ 75

You have 2 Sub Compacts: Shield and P238

The Glock 17 would be another full size

Glock 19 is a compact so bigger than your Sub's and smaller than your CZ. As a thought it is a size you don't have. My full size guns are my range toys. My compact Glocks (19 and 23) are currently my HD weapon of choice. YMMV.

I also have a G22 so I am familiar with the size of the G17.

I think the 19 is the perfect size and also like the 17. I sold a 34, just didn't do anything that much better to substantiate the extra cost and it felt too long for my taste.

Personally I would just go with whichever feels the most comfortable in your hands. Try to get a comparison side by side and just keep switching back and forth between the two to see if you prefer one over the other. When your two choices are both so similar I would go with overall feel and comfort. It's a good feeling when you grab your gun and it just feels right.
