Five-Seven: appropriate SD choice?

The grip on the Five-Seven is huge to accommodate 20 rounds. If you're fine with having a huge grip with only 10-round mags, then go for it.

^ yeah, there's that too. But if you find that a large grip, like on the H&K USP, fits your hand comfortably, then you'll probably be fine with the five-seven too. I think the grip is comfortable, but I don't have small hands either.

5.7mm round is great. It was originally developed to defeat soft body armor, which was rumored to be issued en mass to Warsaw Pact troops. NATO wanted an easy to handle, easy to shoot carbine for the rear echelon and support personnel, just in case if Warsaw Pact tried airborne/infiltration tactic.

The threat never materialized.

I figure if a round fired from carbine is designed to defeat soft body armor, then it's good enough for home/self defense.

The more I think about it, I think there's not much a five-seven could do for SD that my G29 can't already do. So I think realistically it would just be a range toy. Thanks for all the input everyone!

Recoil is light, and the round is effective, but its expensive and the merits of the cartridge are diminished when we are limited to a ten round capacity. I also might be concerned about over penetration with such a fast round.

I own both a five-seven and a PS-90, but my night stand gun is a G30, and my clear-the-house gun is a KSG shotgun.

Well I've already got a 10mm, so 357 sig wouldn't bring much new to the table. I just think the 5.7 is too unique not to own one of, there's not much else out there quite like it

I've got one and I freaking love it. It's flat as hell, no recoil, never had one single issue with ftf fte, nothing at all. 1800 fps is going to kill someone. If you have grandfathered in 20 round mags you win.

I think 9mm hydrashok is the best for SD & HD. 45 is much too expensive and modem ballistics show 9mm to be extremely effective. 5.7 is a great round except cost is out the roof and an FN 5.7 is an expensive gun to lose if you get it taken as evidence. I would say G19, M&P or XD better cost and you won't cry if it's gone.

If you're lucky enough to have old mags I think FN now makes an extended floorplate/spring combo that's a +10 extension.

Its stupid expensive for what it actually is. Especially if you can't buy the good ammo. For HD or SHTF or whatever post apocalypse fantasies you have, a 9mm or 45ACP is probably way better, and usually cheaper.

Love my FiveseveN and would highly recommend it for HD if you have the 20+ round mags.

I wanted the FiveSeven so bad, and for so long, and with ample opportunities to buy it in the past 7 years but I just can't get myself to do it... almost every advantage the FiveSeven has is nerfed in CA including ammo.

Just pointless if you wanted it for anything more than just a range novelty. Move on and get something else.

That PS90 sure is an ugly thing... doesn't even look like a gun. I bet it's fun though!
