Five-Seven: appropriate SD choice?

I'm getting more and more interested in finally picking up a FiveSeven, it's a very unique and interesting cartridge and a great gun. But I'm wondering if it really has any self-defense applications - or rather, is there any compelling reason to choose that over say a 9mm or 45? My carry permit has a min .25 caliber restriction, so in my case we'd only be talking about home defense (or SHTF).

I'm already sold on the idea of a FiveSeven for a range toy, I love the idea of a high-velocity flat-shooting pistol cartridge, I'm merely just curious if it realistically has any decent self-defense applications, or if I'd be better off just continuing to employ 9mm/45/whatever for that purpose.

While some may scoff at anything less than a .45 ACP, given that the 5.7 was first developed as a military round, it is an effective self-defense round. One of the main users in the US is the United States Secret Service, which employs the round in the P-90 sub machine gun. While the ammunition used by the Secret Service is restricted to Law Enforcement in the US, the civilian available ammunition is still a very effective round.

If you are shooting at things with body armor it is better than normal pistol rounds.

But if you are shooting at things with body armor, I would suggest using a rifle lol.

Although much of the "LE restricted" ammo can be purchased on GB and else where, and I do believe the 5.7 round CAN be effective, the 10 rd limitation definitely takes away from my desire to use it for defense.

The P-90, and it's civi cousin the PS-90, are good options if you are using their standard 50 rd mags. I doubt any LE agency would select that round if their capacity was limited to 10.

Can't argue with your logic. If I lived in a free state I would definitely own an PS 90 with several 50 round magazines.

Recoil on a five-seven pistol is very light. I mainly shoot 45acp, and my five-seven feels like a 9mm, or less, in comparison.

The grip on the Five-Seven is huge to accommodate 20 rounds. If you're fine with having a huge grip with only 10-round mags, then go for it.
