2 dot vs 3 dot sights

Just my opinion, but three dots is just too busy. Night sights or otherwise. Have always hated them. Much prefer no dots (plain black) or two dots (Straight Eights). Also, the Sig dot-post design is VERY good (I even like the scallop in the rear sight).sigpicComment

I've always liked the lollipop Sig sight.I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

the figure 8 and dot the i is suppose to be easier to line up. It's a mental thing that says vertical lines are easier to work. That being said, I have all 3 systems. I shoot the 3 dot best, but then again, I practice and use this same gun in training classes..., so I think I'm biased.Doug

I have them both. They both work just fine.Comment

Really, if you use good fundamentals, it doesn't matter. I like the M-9 two dot system better than the 3 dot, but I can't say the 3 dot bothers me as most guns use it and I'm used to it. 90% of your focus is on the Front sight and the dots on the rear sight only serve to help your peripheral vision get the rear sight in place.
Don't worry about the dots.sigpicComment

I used to go for 3 dot night sights.
But after shooting competitions a lot, have moved to fiber optic front sight and plain black rear sight. It is very fast and accurate, and you will find a lot of competition shooters set up their sights this way (there must be a reason!).
Now for a duty or home defense gun, I am working on setting up sights as follows:
* front sight with tritium and white outline (alternately you could do a truglo fiber/tritium front sight)
* rear straight eight type sight with low profile tritium (i.e. no white outline and recessed tritium so that it is not visible in the daytime but provides a rear reference point for low light shooting). If you like 3 dot, you could do the same with 2 low-profile dots on the rear.
I don't like black front sights because they are slower to pick up for me.Last edited by esskay; 02-04-2009, 11:15 AM.Comment

No expert here. Like everything with firearms we tend to overthink perhaps, but they are a tool. And as such we have to analyze the use of our tools. All I have to add on this subject is persons have said they find it easier under stress to use a two dot sight. I welcome any rebuttals to satisfy the validity of this statement.Comment

"Rebuttal" was the wrong word....sorry, "insight"!Comment

I prefer tritium for the front sight only

I like the two dot where the dot on the rear sight is smaller and less bright, e.g. on the Warren Tactical 2 dot night sights.Comment
