Right now the price of ammo is not too high yet, so stock up on .45 and buy that gun. You're hitting the target with .45 because it's slow and therefore a bit more accurate and flat. I personally moved to 10mm and 9mm and .380 in my carry everyday / home defense doctrine. Because the 10 is that much versatile. However in this thing of ours we move from one caliber to another, dump the previous caliber then buy it back sometime later. It's normal. Go for it.

Both will work get whatever you shoot best.

I prefer 45 for target and home defense and have a 10mm for a camp gun.Never owned a 9mm but have shot them.

        9mm is metric
The metric system is embraced by those godless communist countries.

        Are you a godless communist?

          Both.
If the Shield .45 ACP was on the roster, I'd get one to go with my 9mm and .40.

If you are trim and svelte, especially if you are European, you might identify with the 9mm bullets better.
Good one! Never heard that one before. Hahaha!

To the OP: 45 ACP = 1911. You will thank me later.

              9 vs 45...thoughts

9mm can be curved around objects if you fire with a sweeping motion. 45acp is fired from God's gun. But if a woodchuck could chuck wood, he would. Then, 'Merica.

At 7 yds I shoot a 2-3" group with 9 (both eyes open, fairly fast). But, with the 45 I was making one ragged hole with 10 rds.

After doing some reading (again), it seems one of the major benefits of 9mm is the increased mag capacity. But here in CA, that's a moot point. It's 10rds if you're not on the anointed.

I'm fine with the recoil of the 45 although the 9 is lighter, obviously. Ammo price is a consideration but I don't shoot enough to make that the only deciding factor.

                Any other things to consider?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the dead horse beating.
                But seriously....

#1, don't allow cost to be a factor in your self-defense options.
My wife knows that ANY gun in the house except for grandpa's .32 is fair game if SHTF including the $1500 1911.

Capacity can be an issue, depending on what gun you have available.
Also, a double stack 45 loaded up is heavy and has a pretty big grip. That can be a factor in handling.

Ultimately, there is little difference between the two when they hit skin and bone.
Use the one that you are most proficient with and what you LIKE to shoot.

10MM has more speed at 100 yards than a .45ACP has at the muzzle.

Shoot .40, 357 SIG, 9X25 and swap the upper and run .45ACP

OB, I never thought that you, of all people, would recommend 10mm

But you guys are missing the bigger picture here - the cartridge size doesn't matter nearly as much as whether it's fired from a Glock or a 1911

That comes down to which fits better. Which has a natural point to aim for you.
1911 fits the bill in my case.

                              Exactly

Before you say you shoot one better than the other it must always be the same platform and type of Pistol.
