dont skimp on your first handgun. get a sig or an hk or maybe a glock if possible... i bought a cheap pistol for my first like a s&w sigma and hated it wish i could do it over again...get something great cause it darn sure isn't going be the only one. most of my pistols i bought used something to consider it will help save some bucks...good luck and let us know what you decide on.

The 5.7 has similar ballistics to that of a 22 mag. Ammo is harder to find than most due to its "exotic" caliber label (like the 10mm). The gun recoils like a .22, which is nice for rapid fire. As for your first handgun, if the 5.7 is what you really want, get it... but I recommend shooting one first. My personal first gun preference would be a .40 due to its controllable recoil and stopping power.

For a first handgun I would HIGHLY recomend a 22lr semi auto like the Ruger 22/45. Why you ask? Easy. The gun will cost you about $250 used. Ammo will cost you about $10 for 500 rounds at wallmart. You can shoot it all day working on basic fundamentals and not go broke. I own plenty of handguns (around 48? I think) and every time I go shooting my Ruger 22/45 goes with me. When your ammo costs you $20 for 50 rounds, practice is something you will be less likely to do on a regular basis.

Once you have the basics mastered you will have a better idea what you want in a handgun.

I own 2 Fn5-seven's. I have several of the 20 rounders from my LEO days and I love that gun. That being said, I wouldn't recomend it for a first time gun (even if ammo prices were not a factor). The reason is that the controls are not typical of other semi auto handguns. Mags, ammo and initial cost of the gun itself ARE facotrs though. For the cost of the gun, 2000 rounds of ammo and 3 mags ($900 for gun + $750 for ammo + $120 for mags= $1750 roughly) you could afford to buy a ruger 22/45, 5 mags and an entry 9mm handgun and 500 rounds and have money left over to spare ($300 for 22/45 + $50 for ammo +$150 for mags + $350 for used Ruger P95 + $125 for ammo = $975 total means you still saved $600 or so and would own 2 handguns in 2 different calibers).

If you want it, then you want it. No one could disuade me when I wanted a CJ5 jeep in high school. I eventually ended up with one. I bought it for $3500, put baout $10,000 in it and sold it for $3500. Everyone has their passions, but I do regret some.

I would pay extra not to go to walmart. Inferior products and every part of the shopping experience there is a load of ****. It reminds me of people who drive 10 miles out of their way to save $0.03 on a gallon of gas. No thanks.

I totally see your point, I buy things elsewhere when possible, but the fact stands that the ammo is not all that widely available and slightly pricey. Not everyone has local gunshops. I can drive half-hour to WalMart, or an hour-and-a-half to the nearest gunshop, which may not even have 5.7x28.

If you buy the pistol, you should be well aware of the ammo situation. The cheapest stuff I find is always delivered to me by the case anyway, so the local availability is a moot point IMO
