I've heard that these were now legal in CA despite the 20 round magazines... is this true? I'm not old enough to buy a handgun yet, but I plan on it when I can, and this is the gun I was looking to buy. Also, how's the stopping power of the 5.7 round, and would you all recommend for your first handgun? The only other handgun I've shot before was my brother's 1911 Kimber .45 which was fun but I think I'd prefer something with a little less recoil. How much do these (57's) usually run, and I imagine ammo would be kind of hard to find for it as well, right?

They have been in CA for awhile. Turners carries them. Interesting HG, if it wasnt for the grip size I would get one.Pennys Dad

The 5.7 has similar ballistics to that of a 22 mag. Ammo is harder to find than most due to its "exotic" caliber label (like the 10mm). The gun recoils like a .22, which is nice for rapid fire. As for your first handgun, if the 5.7 is what you really want, get it... but I recommend shooting one first. My personal first gun preference would be a .40 due to its controllable recoil and stopping power.Co-Founder of the Contra Costa Contras shooting teamComment

I own one and am honestly coming to love the thing. But I definitely would NOT recommend it for a first handgun. Also, I would say the recoil is more like a light 9mm rather than a .22! Very light, but you aren't gonna be confusing it with any rimfire that I've seen.
For your first gun, I would recommend a 9mm of some sort.Comment

If you want your first handgun to be something, for lack of a better word, cool, and you're really sure you want the FN Five seveN, then go for it.
But I would really suggest getting something like a 9mm to start out with.
There are some nice 9mm handguns out there and most of them come in a 40sw caliber as well. And if you want something big like a 45acp, cant really go wrong with a 1911.
But get what you want, and what you like, but make sure it fits your hand.Comment

Gun Vault has one in stock last time I was there.
This is my favorite tactical pistol. Very Very Accurate, recoil like a .22, plenty of power like a mini .223, under rapid fire this gun tripple taps like no other.
I own a very early model and feel in love right away.Comment

For new handgun owners, I'd recommend something in a 9mm as ammo is cheaper and you can afford to shoot more. A 100rd box of 9mm is about $18 (walmart), while the 5.7 is about $20-$25 for a box of 50. Do the math and you'll find 9mm isn't so bad. Recoil is relatively low, compared to the 45 and 40 calibers. And 9mm ammo very accessible.Last edited by RedDawn; 01-03-2009, 9:56 PM.sigpic

Just buy the Five seven, Its my first hand, love the thing, people completely under estimate the 5.7x28 Round, go to www.fivesevenforum.com and watch the ballistic videos they have. Go to bass pro shop i got mine for 999.80 out the door it was on sale. Its an easy gun to shoot, plus you can let off the whole mag without having to really recomp your next shot. So thus if you had to use it for home defense it will get the job done. Plus the 5.7 has very good accuracy. You can shoot longer distance. Plus you have something different. I love 1911s but everyone and their grandpa has one.Comment

While the 5-7 is an interesting gun, I wouldn't recommend it as a first gun. As others have said, a 9mm is probably better. Personally, I shoot my CZ 75B more than my 5-7, but I do like shooting the 5-7. If you're thinking of the 5-7 for HD, you can get better ammo in other calibers. Biggest knock on the 5-7 is the price of the gun, and ammo isn't cheap, but not outrageous either. Most places have ammo for about $20/50 rounds.Comment

For a first handgun, an FN Five SeveN would not be my first recommendation. I would normally suggest (in semi-auto) 9mm for economical reasons (low cost) while being generally a good performer for defensive purposes. If I was looking for a good training round, I'd go with a .22LR pistol.
The FN Five SeveN is about like a .22 Magnum in performance, less recoil than a 9mm, and a whole lot more costly to shoot per round. I think it would be perfectly fine as a 2nd or 3rd handgun, but IMHO, it's just too costly to buy it as a first and learn to shoot with.Comment
