CZ SP01 or Tanfoglio Elite Match

Yes, I know that the Tanfo is off-roster but this is a pretty active handgun site and there are a lot of members who compete and may be familiar with the Elite Match. I'm no longer a CA resident so the roster is not an issue for me.

I'm interested in a full size, CZ style 9mm pistol and am considering a CZ SP01 or a Tanfoglio Elite Match. When the Elite Match was $600 it was a pretty easy choice but now they are about $700 versus $650 for the CZ. This would be strictly a range gun and will not be used for defense or competition.

I really want a 1911 in 9mm that's not a 1911. I want a crisp trigger and good accuracy. The problem is that the Tanfoglio is simply unavailable in gun stores for a side by side comparison. I've handled the SP01 and it has an okay, but not great trigger. Obviously, I could spend a couple hundred extra and get a great trigger (and convert to SAO) but how does the stock trigger on an Elite Match compare? If the trigger isn't excellent, there really isn't any value to the Tanfo over a SP01.

Are stock Elite Matches good to go or should I just spend the extra cash to buy and upgrade a SP01?

Love my bone stock Elite Match in 9mm. That said I have never shot a SP01. I do have a 75b SA which a rarely shoot now. For me the size and ergonomics of Elite Match are perfect. The stock trigger feels great to me but I may upgrade at some point.

Does Sao factor in the decision for you? Because the elite match is sao. It's also semi custom hand fitted by a true gunsmith at the factory. It is nicer than the sp01. Also it does not have a full dust cover so if looks are a factor you should consider that as well. Not many guns I like more than the elite match.

i have a witness elite match in 9mm. It's my favorite handgun. I've shot it in comparison with my CZ P-01, my friend's CZ 75B, and his SP-01. We both like the tanfoglio better. It's ridiculously accurate, soft shooting and the trigger is just perfect to me. I've bought and sold a lot of guns, but i would never sell my tanfoglio.

SP01 all the way. I havent fired the Tangfolio but I can say without a shadow of doubt the SP01 is the finest pistol I have ever shot. The recoil is very mild and the groups are tight. I have never, nor do I intend, to compete with it but its a great handgun.

If you have not shot an elite match how can you make the comparison?

I have a 9mm SP-01 and had an Elite Match 45....only sold the Tanfoglio cuz I then got a CZ 97B "E package" and the Elite Match brought a better return on investment

If it's for the range as you said, the single-action trigger of the Elite Match is better out-of-the-box. The heavy DA, longer SA trigger of the SP-01 can be tuned to sweetness, but it's gonna cost you a little cash. It doesn't seem like you want to spend more, since the $50 extra for the Tanfoglio makes you hesitate....get the Tanfoglio.

                Get the Tanfoglio.

I have two; not elite match, and absolutely love them.

                Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

If we are talking about stock guns, then, to me, the Tanfoglio Witness Elite Match in 9mm will win by a wide margin against the CZ SP01 in 9mm. Now if we are taking upgrades into consideration, say a $400 budget, then that changes the game by a lot. See, Tanfoglio does not have that many aftermarket parts and support as the CZ does.

Is the stock trigger of the Elite Match excellent? Well, let's try to define excellent. It is way better than a stock CZ's trigger (even the 75SA) without a doubt. Is it as good as a finely tuned CZ trigger? NO, not even close.

Which one is more ergonomic? CZ SP01 will fit more hands.

Can't go wrong with either. So in short, get both

If you want to consider upgrades then you could just go with the CZ TS.
                    Awesome trigger.

For those of you who have never shot a EAA Tanfoglio Witness Elite Match, you don't know what you're missing. There is always something better out there and this is it.

I would take a Witness Elite Match over even a tricked out SP-01 any day, with the exception of maybe an Accu-Shadow or Shadow Target. The Elite Match will even give the CZ 75 Tactical Sport a run for its money.

I consider Tanfoglio's as the Ferrari of guns. They are made in Italy and are sexy as hell. Performance is great out of the box and can even be made better, just like a CZ.

They are really the unicorns of the gun world as most are used in competition and are hardly ever seen at any local gun stores, even in free states. One of the best bang for the buck but now these have gone up in price and MSRP is around the $950 range.

                            I have a shadow target with a 1# 10 oz. SA, CGW/CZC, and I also own a Tanfo Stock 3 with Hennings/EG parts... that being said;

                            Tanfo, hands down.

I've got a shadow target and still take Tanfo.

Litespeeds, I beg to differ, but I understand that we are talking about individual preferences. I respect yours, but we differ.

As much as I like my stock Elite Match in 9mm, I will take my Cajunized CZ SP01 (still in SA/DA) in 9mm over it 6 times out of 10. Slightly related, I will take a Cajunized CZ 97B (either SAO or SA/DA) over a stock Elite Match in .45 ACP 8 times out of 10. I don't own a Cajunized CZ 97B, but have shot one many times.

This is not a fair comparison, however, as I was comparing stock guns vs customized guns. Cajun upgrades to a CZ can add up to $600 or more, depending on the upgrades, which will make that CZ cost around twice as much as a stock Elite Match (I guess old pricing of these guns) after shipping, parts, labor, etc.

As far as the Tanfoglios being the Ferrari of guns, maybe. That seems like a good analogy. I hope to shoot high end Tanfoglios, i.e. Limited, etc., some day.
