CZ SP01 or Tanfoglio Elite Match

The only reasonably priced wood grips I've found for mine are from EAA. Very plain, but they're checkered and sufficiently hand filling. I thought grips for the CZ TS would fit, but they're too small. A fellow on EBay sells stippled poly grips and they're fine, but far too thin for my taste. So I bought the Tanfoglio and am quite pleased with it. There's a few things that could be better but it's definitely superior (in my eyes) to the SP01.
It's a big gun, similar in size to a government model 1911. It's a little more ergonomic in the grip but also fatter than the 1911. Weight is similar but ammo capacity is 17+1. The same gun in 45 ACP is 10+1.
Fit and finish is excellent. I'm not really a fan of two tone guns but I think it looks very nice. The stock grips suck. They are ugly and have thumb rests (probably for import points?) that interfere with my hand placement. I'm going to replace them with some walnut grips when I get around to it.
The trigger is quite good but not quite excellent. When I dry fired it, I thought that the take up was too long, the reset was too long, and the break was too hard. After firing it, I still think the break is just a bit too hard and would be perfect if it was maybe a pound or two less but the takeup and reset are fine. I shot it side by side with a Sar K2 45ACP (very similar guns) which I thought had a pretty good single action trigger but it's not in the same league as the Tanfo.
Accuracy was excellent. I shot it alongside the Sar K2 and a Springfield 1911 Loaded (with trigger job) and found it at least as good as the Springfield and substantially better than the K2. In addition to the good trigger, it also has very good sights. The sights are plain black target sights similar to a Ruger MK target pistol. For my use (informal range gun), they are perfect although they wouldn't be a good choice for action type shooting.
If there's anyone else selling good wood grips for the post 2005 EAA it would be good to know.GOA Member & SAF Life MemberComment

Lol, I hear ya!
Got it down to 0.18" travel. Could be less in SA, but DA needs a little more wiggle room.

i don't have any guns b/c obama and the government said guns r bad.
but if i had to pick, i'd say it really comes down to which ever one fits your hand better and you shoot better since this is a range only gun. i have large hands so the large frame tanfoglio fits me better and it's what i'd buy. except the one i really want came out after sse ended.
now if i had to trust my life with said gun, then i'd lean towards the CZ if i wanted 9mm and tanfoglio if i wanted 45.Last edited by penguinofsleep; 05-06-2016, 10:58 PM.Comment

I see all of you drooling over these CZs all day long here. I just do not understand the attraction. But then again I don't really understand the attraction to the 1911 either. With HK, Walther and Glock on the market, what else do you need?sigpic

I haven't shot the ppq but I have shot usps extensively to me they are extremely over rated. The only thing I like about it is you can run it cocked and locked or decocked or of you're weird decocked and locked. The glock just feels like a brick in my hand and I can appreciate the simplicity and utility of it. Maybe after training with it some I'll come to appreciate it more. For the time being though the cz reigns supreme.Just a libertarian guy in a Leftist Authoritarian state.

I see all of you drooling over HK, Walther, and Glock (and paying way over retail for them). I just do not understand the attraction. It's like buying a Toyota Corolla; it's a good, reliable car but there's just no excitement. I have tupperware guns but I can afford extra guns that can be more interesting (to me). I think many of the people on this website have many more guns than they "need" so they buy guns that they want.Check back later for a witty comment.Comment

Well, in true Calguns fashion, I bought both.
I've been on a NFA binge lately and decided it was time for a centerfire pistol suppressor. Obviously that requires a host gun so I started looking around. I was looking for the suppressor ready CZ P-07/P-09 but my LGS didn't have any. I found a pretty good deal on the suppressor ready (threaded barrel, suppressor height sights)SP 01 at Kentucky Gun Co and purchased it. I haven't shot it yet so I'm not sure how the trigger compares to the Tanfo but I doubt it is as good.
Maybe I'll sell the Tanfo and use the money to have Cajun Gun Works do some trigger work on the CZ.
This should serve as a warning to you guys that want to leave CA; being spoiled for choice can make for hard decisions. You're better off letting Jerry Brown and company decide what guns you can buy. Guns are icky.Check back later for a witty comment.Comment

This guy gets it.If we are talking about stock guns, then, to me, the Tanfoglio Witness Elite Match in 9mm will win by a wide margin against the CZ SP01 in 9mm. Now if we are taking upgrades into consideration, say a $400 budget, then that changes the game by a lot. See, Tanfoglio does not have that many aftermarket parts and support as the CZ does.
Is the stock trigger of the Elite Match excellent? Well, let's try to define excellent. It is way better than a stock CZ's trigger (even the 75SA) without a doubt. Is it as good as a finely tuned CZ trigger? NO, not even close.
Which one is more ergonomic? CZ SP01 will fit more hands.
Can't go wrong with either. So in short, get both
