    First Pistol

    Hows it going Calgunners!?

I'm going to be turning 21 in May, and going to be purchasing my first pistol, and my Father would like to get a matching one with me. We decided on the 40S&W caliber. I haven't had much experience with pistols myself, and my Dad has really only ever used revolvers. So I made a list of what pistols we should go check out, and was wondering your opinion about all of them on the list. I do not know if they are all on roster. Also, if they're are some really bad ones that I should stay away from let me know!

Also just some general input about what ones we should pay extra attention too, and what ones you think are the best.

    HK VP40/USP
    Sig P226/229/250/320
    Glock 22/23
    FNX/S 40
    Beretta PX4 Storm
    Walther PPQ M2
    CZ PO7/P09/75

    Update:
I already had the idea for going to the store and checking the guns out. The list was originally created to ask people at shops, and to finger blast the guns. I see a lot of hate towards .40, and all the love towards 9mm. I just spoke with him and he isn't set on .40 like I thought he was. I would like to add I have shot some pistols. .357 revolver, .45 XD, .45 1911. I haven't really had any experience with 9m, or .40 for that matter. With 9mm back on the table, and the fact he mentioned eventually being able to CCW, I'm now changing what I'm looking at to Compact 9mms(we have big hands, no sub). He seems to be in love with American brands, but I'm going to try and get him to check out some imports. A lot of you are also saying we shouldn't get matching firearms. The idea behind it is to have a nice pistol that we'll both bond over, and be able to learn together.

    Update 2:
After doing some looking around, and sending some links back and forth here is the current list we wanna take a look at when we head to the store/range.
    CZ75
    Glock 17/19
    HK P2000
    Beretta 92
    Beretta M9
    S&W Shield
    S&W SD9VE

Will keep you guys updated on what we enjoy when we go!

    Forget .40sw, get 9mm...

Glock 17 or 19 and tons of ammo.

(BTW, most of your list is off roster)
    All of this.

If you haven't shot the pistols on your list, they probably shouldn't be on you list.

Do your homework at a nearby range first.

      Forget the 40 buy a 9mm.

Unfortunately, you won't find a good answer here. Some people will give you their opinions, but they are just that - their opinions - which may or may not apply to you. There is no easy answer. You will have to pay your dues: You will need to go to lots of gun shops, test-fit specific guns to your hands, then once you have narrowed the list somewhat, rent those guns that are finalists and run a bunch of rounds through them.

You may also want to consider being flexible in both your choice of round and also getting the same gun as your dad. After test firing a few guns, you may decide that the 40SW is a little too snappy, and you like the 9mm better. You may also find you like a gun that your dad does not, or vice-versa. If you buy a gun just because your dad likes it, you may end up disappointed, and instead of looking forward to going to the range, you will dread it.

I know I haven't helped you in the way that you asked, but I have tried helping you in the way you likely need - based on some of my own mistakes - so you will be happier with your decision down the road.

        Good Luck!!!

          Roster: http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/

          I suggest 9mm as well.
Put your hands on as many as you can.
          Check with any shooting friends.
          Call local ranges.
I think there is a Sacramento CG chapter.

My wife & I bought two Buckmarks, we ending up shooting only one at a time.

Each of you go with what you like.

Good luck and give us a report on the decision.

I'm another who sold almost all my .40 and stuck with 9mm. And definitely go to a rental range and try out as many as you can get your hands on.

But if you and your dad are both buying a gun, buy something different so you can both get proficient with at least a couple types. If one or both don't like it, as long as you've bought something decent and popular you can sell it for just a little less than you paid and buy something different.

And as other said, some of your list isn't on roster.

I would go to the range. I sure wouldn't start with a 40.cal. i would personally go with a 9mm like A M&P if possible the pro. I own a 22 glock and a 19. Love them both but i hit my targets better with the 9mm... I can tell you what to get and what not to get But ,it's what feels comfortable in your hand. I say go to the shooting range and make a list based on that.

You can get a conversion 9mm barrel for the Glock 22/23, if you ever decide to shoot a different caliber.

                    I personally love the 40 S&W!
A few of the guns you listed are on roster and all of them pop up on the classified's here or you can find most at local gun stores/pawn shops.
I have Glock 27, 23 and 35. All are great guns. Extremely reliable and easy to work on. The 27 & 23 are EDC guns on my CCW. They are both very quick on target however the 23 is best for double taps. The 35 is my "fun gun" and as such is only a range gun.
I have shot both the PX4 and the PPQ M2 in 40 and both shoot very well.
All the guns you have listed are good durable etc.
The VP40 is a very easy gun to shoot and well made, but expensive because it's off roster. Easily twice as much as a Glock.
I'm also a big fan of the Sig P series.
Another gun to look for even though it's off roster would be a S&W M&P40, they are well designed and shoot very smooth.

Get what you want (I like the 40 though). If you Father is used to a hammer break, striker will not be as fun.

                      I recommend:
                      Father = CZ-75b-SA in 40.
                      You = CZ-75b-SA in 9.

There really is not a 1911 in the 40 caliber on roster, but a 45/9 split would not be bad at all.

There there seems to a bit of nostalgia (or will be), so it should be all steel.

Switch off at the range, have fun!

                        Get the GLOCK G23.

GLOCKs are rugged, simple, precise, and inexpensive.

The .40/180 gr. is a great round, always available, and not very pricey.

My local range sells both 9mm and .40 for the same price.

Get a Lone Wolf 5.3" .357 SIG barrel and you have a very nice long range/woods pistol.

9mm is fine for the sub-compacts, but for a compact and up? .40 and up.

Higher recoiling firearms only teach 1 thing and that is how to flinch. 9mm full size pistols are really nice to shoot, lower cost ammo and low recoil.
