Just something my buddies and I use to describe when you handle a gun at the counter. You tend to put your fingers, and hands all over the gun, in every nook, and crany. Just a funny way to say that you're going to heavily inspect a gun.

      The list:

      Glock 17/19
      HK P2000
      Beretta 92
      Beretta M9
      S&W Shield

I'm not sure which XD you shot. But if it was one of the smaller ones like the size of the M&P Shield, then yes you would probably notice a big difference between 9mm and .40. The .40 is a pretty snappy round to begin with. And smaller guns just don't usually soak up the recoil like a larger gun will.

To this end, I'm just curious why you're looking at something as small as the Shield? If you're looking for a carry gun, then I understand. But otherwise, and particularly for a first gun, most people are better served with a full size gun. Larger guns handle recoil much better than larger ones. And the sight radius is longer which usually helps most people with accuracy. Many small guns can also be downright unpleasant to shoot...which can be very demotivating to a new shooter.

But if you are thinking of getting something Shield size, I would absolutely encourage you to rent and shoot the exact model you're getting. Again, because many people find smaller guns unpleasant so try it out so you know what you're getting into.

Seek to acquire Glock 22 with 9mm conversion barrel. Forsake other, inferior brands. By doing so you will enjoy unequaled reliability. Gaston will not fail you.

Also agree with the go 9 instead of 40 crowd.

Glock 19 for versatility. Cz 75 is also an awesome gun.

Take a look at a M&P 9 Pro w/5" slide. In all seriousness, your "list" will change drastically as you will find some that fit your hands well and others that wont, irregardless of what youve read about them in the internet. Enjoy the process, and relish in the 10-day wait! Personal recommendation: 1911
