Hoppes#9 gun oil and a soft tooth brush. Apply alot of oil and let sit a long while and run brush over it. Repeat as many times as needed. It will come off after several apps.
Do not use abbrasives. You round out edges.Comment

What in the name of God happened? I'm in disbelief that such a terrible thing can happen to a gun sitting in a safe netherless a Colt Python for that matter. Makes me want to run to my safe and check on my herd. Good luck OPComment

The outside doesn't look that bad. It can be fixed. You could end up with a nice satin finish. The problem is the bore. If the entire bore is bad, I do not know what can be done except installing another barrel. If just the muzzle end of the bore is bad, the barrel can be shortened. Either way, I don't think the gun is ruined.

Ahhh time to lube the guns people.
Rust can still happen even if the gun is inside the safe because of the moisture from opening/closing it and temperature changes.
This is why its recommended leave desiccants inside.
