If you do grind it down to level with the slide top when a round is chambered, you will have created a condition where a loaded gun appears to be unloaded. That's unsafe.

If you grind it down to lower its profile at all when a round is chambered, the LCI will sink below the slide top when the chamber is empty. That would be ugly.

It would only be unsafe if some IDIOT was handling it and relied on the LCI instead of properly physically and visually checking the chamber. Of course, LCIs and even manual safeties can fail and only idiots should ever rely on them for any reason. Unfortunately, within another few years, many shooters will probably fall into this category thanks to morons who force these features on those who should have proper training and education instead.

Personally, I would remove the LCI instead of grinding it down but, I can't see it when I'm shooting mine or when it's in it's holster so, I've opted to leave mine alone.

Technicality: California requires a "CLI" (Chamber Load Indicator), and specifically defines it in Regulations.

That only pertains to being tested for inclusion in the roster. It has no bearing on possession or carry.

Andddd...no one said it does. The initial post referenced how they hated that S&W made the LCI so garish in its paint. The response was, the Ca regulations require it. The cited regulations pointed that out. No part of my post referenced carry, possession or legality.

Sometimes sold in Vacuum repair shops for about $6 for 5oz bottle. I'd be vary cautious with with Super Solvent since not only does it dissolve stuff nothing else will, it soaks into your skin in a really weirdly fast manner like (again) NOTHING ELSE, and takes whatever it dissolved along with it.


IIRC my Glock's LCI doesn't have any color from factory, so you should be GTG.

Although on any duty gun or if you ever actually use it I'd expect a lawyer to claim you musta mistakenly shot his sainted client by mistake and that can be traced back your tampering with the safety features of the gun, and now you are trying to lie your way out of that by making up the story about him trying to mug you.

The Shield is the epitome of the saying "the grass is always greener on the other side".

I have so many customers here in AZ that actually prefer the big red LCI on their Shield that they order the CA version instead of the free state version. I have a husband/wife/daughter set of clients than have 3 CA shields and they picked them because of the LCI.

I don't care for it only because I treat all guns as if they are loaded so the LCI actually can make a person sloppy but I deal with full auto open bolt guns and belt feds with no safety on them so I have to be careful with every single gun I touch because some work opposite of typical guns. But for customers that only have 1 or 2 guns because they are new to the sport I think the LCI is a nice option.

The issue here is that it's required by the state in order to be sold. Like you said I think it makes people sloppy. You should always always always pull the slide back and check.
