Goodbye red shark fin (Shield)

I'm not against LCIs. I think theyre great. However, I hated that SW painted it bright red with white letters. (I know I'm not the only one). So, I took care of the problem. I didnt do a complete write up because I didnt know how it would go, but its pretty self explanatory.

Remove the LCI (one pin)
Soak it in Acetone, Paint thinner, etc
Red paint wipes right off

The white would NOT come off, even soaking overnight in Acetone.

So, I just painted over it with some high-temp black header paint, a few coats, then wiped the flat surface off with acetone, leaving the black still in the recessed letters. I may go back over it with some gloss black paint or nail polish to make it stand out just a bit. But for now, I like this much better.

Legal: IANAL, BUT, I dont think this will be an issue. The pistol is listed as having an LCI, and it still does. It makes no mention of the cosmetic description of the LCI.

I was thinking that I'd remove mine but, after getting use to it, I am starting to like it the way it is. I just hate the fact that the state require LCIs.

(d)(1) A functioning chamber load indicator must meet all of the following conditions:
(A) Explanatory text and/or graphics either incorporated within the chamber load indicator or adjacent to the chamber load indicator is/are permanently displayed by engraving, stamping, etching, molding, casting, or other means of permanent marking.
(B) Each letter of explanatory text must have a minimum height of 1/16 inch.
(C) The explanatory text and/or graphics shall be of a distinct visual contrast to that of the firearm.
(D) The “loaded” indication, that portion of the chamber load indicator that visually indicates there is a round in the chamber, shall be of a distinct color contrast to the firearm.
(E) Only when there is a round in the chamber, the “loaded” indication is visible on the firearm from a distance of at least twenty-four inches. When there is no round in the chamber, the “loaded” indication must not be visible.
(F) The text and/or graphics and the “loaded” indication together inform a reasonably foreseeable adult user of the pistol, that a round is in the chamber, without requiring the user to refer to a user's manual or any other resource other than the pistol itself.

Mine doesn't bother me in the least, although like CSA, I hate that it has to be there. It doesn't interfere with sight picture or snag on the holster so who cares?

I can use an LCI but the ca model is over the top. I'm going to grind one down to respectable height.

If you do grind it down to level with the slide top when a round is chambered, you will have created a condition where a loaded gun appears to be unloaded. That's unsafe.

If you grind it down to lower its profile at all when a round is chambered, the LCI will sink below the slide top when the chamber is empty. That would be ugly.

A little harder to get over that, since it doesn't exist.

The Shield is the epitome of the saying "the grass is always greener on the other side".

I have so many customers here in AZ that actually prefer the big red LCI on their Shield that they order the CA version instead of the free state version. I have a husband/wife/daughter set of clients than have 3 CA shields and they picked them because of the LCI.

I don't care for it only because I treat all guns as if they are loaded so the LCI actually can make a person sloppy but I deal with full auto open bolt guns and belt feds with no safety on them so I have to be careful with every single gun I touch because some work opposite of typical guns. But for customers that only have 1 or 2 guns because they are new to the sport I think the LCI is a nice option.
