My First .45

I'm in a pretty big dilemma here. I'm finally turning 21 pretty quick here ...

You sure are. Do you shoot handguns a lot with buddies? I would suggest shooting what your friends have and then decide. If you look at the "for sale" ads I would guess 50% of the 45 ACP pistols that are for sale is by people who did not like it.

Get a Glock 17 or a Beretta 92FS and go from there. You have plenty time to buy 100 or 200 handguns in the future. It will be like the flavor of the month thing if you get hooked on shooting. It is fun and the next step will be reloading your own ammunition.

If you want a non roster 45 then search for sale ads until you find the 45 of your dreams.

I have looked at the sig 220, and it's an awesome gun and I am considering it, the only thing really holding me back from buying it is that I feel like buying it sort of like compromising

You can get 10rd mags for the 220.

1st off, IMHO .45 is not as cost prohibitive as I keep hearing. It can be found for around in steal case form or reliable reman form for $15-$17 a box of 50:

Even with 9mm you are looking at $11+ per 50 rounds.

The one gun to feed scenario OP is looking at makes it doable.

Now for the pistol choice. Where are you and what do you plan to do with your pistol BigGovernment? Are you going to get a CCW?

If you do FNX 45 the Beretta PX4 are a bit bulky. Not that the p227 would be easy to tote. I had a P220 Carry. Great gun. But a bit too heavy and bulky for me to carry often.

I would try to shoot all your choices if you can (borrow, rent, whatever). You can keep your eye on the market place here. You will end up finding one of those for purchase here. There are several of 2 of the guns you are looking for there now. But they are at "Off Roster" prices. Good luck there.

P220s can be found at good prices here. I love 1911s but if I had only one pistol and it had to be .45 and hammer fired it would be a P220.

And finally my 2 cents. You are very young and already getting the bitter taste of the laws that bind us in our beautiful state. If these things you are learning are bothering you now just beware that they are not likely to get better.

I made my choice a long time ago and I am here to stay. I have worked and will continue to work within the walls that govern me to try to regain our basic rights and freedoms here. But if I were 20 today I would be looking to relocate to a place that already infringes less on my rights and freedoms and focus my energies elsewhere.

Go to the range and try the rentals. Buy what feels best top you. Can't go wrong with anything mentioned already but go try before you buy.

Thank you all for taking the time out of your day to respond to my post. I have received better advice than I was expecting. A number of you have convinced me that the SIG p220 is worth it, and that is now back to the top of my list. Fortunately, I have shot one before as a friend of mine inherited one from a passed relative who carried it as a duty weapon. Other reviews I have read have signaled that the 220 is just as reliable if not more reliable than the 1911 and more accurate. I didn't realize that prices are comparable, when looking at a good quality 1911. I'm going to do some more reading to ultimately make my final decision; thanks again and I will update this post when I have my gun!

Like others have said just watch the marketplace untill you find the off roster gun you want.. That is if you still want them bad enough?

I would recommend a glock 21 or a Springfield 1911..maybe a sig 22 but they re a bit bulky..

I'm gonna go another direction here and say get yourself a S&W or Colt 1917 or some other S&W .45ACP revolver, I got my 1917 last year right before my 26th birthday and it has been an amazing shooter. It may not meet your requirements of being max capacity as CA would allow, but you can't spin a cylinder on a 1911 or a Sig

If you've got to have 10-rd capacity, you can find a 227 PPT. A better bet would be to just get a 220. You can find those for as low as $700 NIB. There is no better, or more accurate, out-of-the-box .45 money can buy than a P220. Don't mess with anything else. There is SIG, then there is everything else
