opinion on Shield or compact xd?

I have an xds 45,it's very Compact. Would go for an xds if you can get one.

If you're carrying it in OC you should check out the restrictions about modifying your handguns, it lists trigger mods so be careful. If you qualify with it and then make changes you could open up a can of worms.

I have the cal version of the shield 40 and the NTS shield 9, both have okay triggers, I really dislike the knee joint trigger safety it makes it feel mushy. The apex kit looks cool especially the one with the new solid trigger. Debating getting one for carry.

I like the shield. I have the CA 9mm version and can't find much to complain about. It's to small in my hands to be a precision instrument, but it is small enough that I'll likely carry it often, which is the point. I'm not a fan of the 8-round magazine due to the way the sleeve fits, but do prefer the finger extension on the 7-round version.

I found with carry knives years ago, the best one is the one you have on you when you need it. It doesn't have to be perfect as long as it is capable of doing the job. My fancy blades are typically neglected in favor of a smaller cheaper spyderco... and I use it every single day. It is less noticeable when not in use, easy to maintain and there is no emotional connection and

Shield feels good on the hand until I squeezed the trigger.

I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones. I just can't get over the trigger.

I guess after doing some research on Shield, a lot of people say that trigger gets better after a few hundred rounds. Or go Apex trigger if can't Wait

With the roster exemption gone your choices on sub compact handguns are extremely limited again.

That's the list I can think of off the top of my head.
I would ignore anything double stack for carry.

My personal preference would be the Shield, EMP, or the P238. I'm not a fan of carrying double stack pistols, and I hate the long trigger on Kahrs.

they're out there in the ppt market, just be patient..



if you're after a 9mm, shield and xds are both good options..

if you're after a .40, shield is an option but no xds .40 anytime soon if ever..

I bought the shield .40 for Mrs. Bee's bug..

for all the tests and trials I put it through, it passed muster, no complaints..

I don't critique carry guns to target pistol standards, very few I can't shoot comfortably..

best thing for you to do before investing any significant amount in off roster options, is to test drive as many as you can to make some eliminations..

I got my bodyguard .380 for $320, shield .40 for $350 and xds .45 with robar grip, mags, and etw holster, all pictured above for $550..

if I was subject to today's ppt market only, I'd be more selective prior to buying..

but at the end of the day, both Springfield and Smith and Wesson make reliable, sturdy carry guns

and no matter how many guns you end up with, don't sell anything unless it's a finacial must..

Totally personal preference. I can't say which is better for you but I went with a shield when I was deciding on the XDS, shield, or one of the khar pistols

Many new shooters don't like the pinky dangling off the gun but the truth is, most people don't have much strength in the pinky finger anyways

I love my shield. Pair of 7 round mags are fine for carry. In a sd situation 15 rounds (one in chamber) should be enough to break contact/handle the issue

I have both. Shield .40 and XD Sub Compact 9mm. Both great guns. If you don't like your pinky dangling, purchase a pearce pinky extender.

I have an XDS on my permit and a PPS for backup, keep those both in mind if you see them in the marketplace as well. The Shield is a good gun though, has a great entry price and a solid aftermarket. I would definitely get these if I had one. http://magguts.com/shop/smith-wesson...-wesson-shield.

I would definitely recommend the shield or XDS over the xd compact. Like others have said, you already have two more full size guns, definitely go on the smaller side. I have both the XDS and shield, and they are both great firearms. I shoot the XDS somewhat better when going for accuracy on the range. I also feel that i'm able to get a better grip on the XDS. However, the XDS is slightly heavier than the shield. I added some talon grips to the shield and a small pinky extension by NDZ Performance. It really helps getting sights back on target quickly. the talon grips and extension shown below:




I one of the minority, I guess, who feels the shield trigger is just fine the way it is. The fact is that you won't be using this thing for slowly lined up shots. It's for self-defense, where you won't even have time to line up your sights. My trigger has a little travel, hits a wall, and breaks. The first movement after it hits the wall is it breaking. The reset isn't amazing, but adequate. The reset on the XDS is verrrrry nice, very audible and clear. I think the trigger on both are just fine for self defense, which, oh yeah, is what these were made for.
