Finally got on the phone with them yesterday and was approved. Although I needed a background check done again. Reason being is because the new permit they're issuing has a completely different permit number. No fee was collected, background was completed within 30mins then I got an email saying it will be mailed out tomorrow (which is today) so I should receive it in the mail within few biz days.

I did my renewal online through permitium 3 months before expiration. Everything went in smoothly and then got stuck in "assigning to processor". I waited months and nothing happened. Around my expiration date I emailed and got a form reply. I called a couple weeks later and had to wait in a call queue (maybe 15 minutes). Then a terrific person picked up the call, found my application and pushed it through. I got a text, email and phone call while I was still on the phone with her that my application was approved. She even updated my expiration date so I don't lose any time. Now I'm just waiting to get it in the mail. So it looks like some things could get hung up in the system but otherwise, the online systems are working very well. The AZ DPS people are also super helpful and friendly.

Congrats on the CWP approval, however I don't understand a redundant "background Check" just for a new permit format? Did AZDPS state that you are in fact going to receive the new updated permit format and if so, it sounds like the new format will also have a new CWP numbering format too??? Not sure about their current CWP numbering scheme, but the last three digits on my AZ CWP have always matched the last three digits of my DL, even when I received a replacement CWP years ago and it had a new permit number!

This appears to be a common occurrence and I don't understand why, however once you call and speak with AZDPS, everything is completed right then on the phone!! Please don't sit and endlessly wait for your CWP!! If your CWP is not approved after two weeks of having your application totally completed (including prints) go ahead and call AZDPS and they are super nice and helpful....

Anyone know the current timeline of when I should expect to get my permit in the mail? I am a new CWP applicant, is it 2-3 weeks from the time of applying to receiving it in the mail? I applied 7/15, fingerprints mailed out 7/18 and delivered to them 7/22 according to tracking info. On permitium it says "pending fingerprint submission".

I would give it at least another week or 2, since you mailed the fingerprints. Online application should be faster than paper application, but fingerprint cards get still FBI check I believe so that can take some time. You can always all CWP office and check, just be patient if you're on hold for a lil while (it can be depending on how busy they are). Usually very nice and helpful, and hopefully can give you ETA or push it through (no guarantee they can but some have had this happen).

When the lady on the line mentioned I needed to have a background check done, I asked her why as I too didn't understand. She replied with, "well, we don't know what each individual has done between now and when they were first issued the permit, so we do it". Then I asked her, "what's the cost"? When she said, no cost, I ended the questions there. I just didn't want to have to pay again and if I was going to pay again, it might as well be another 5 years. Not sure if it's a requirement for everyone who request a replacement card but that was the info given to me. I just checked the new permit #, the last three digits does not match my DL, it is also different from the card that I previously had.

Glad to see that the AZ process is so smooth and fast! Submitted my out of state application today and mailed off my fingerprint cards today as well, looking forward to getting a permit from them within 30 days it looks like.

Good luck hopefully what happened to me doesn't happen to you where they rejected BOTH fingerprint cards claiming that the quality was bad even though I went to an actual place with an experienced fingerprint technician and was out $83 for that. I then found out you can just do electronic fingerprints that get sent out immediately through Fieldprint on the site for just a $10 fee.

If you want to speed up process-give them call in a week and ask status. Looks like call like this trigger faster review and approval.

I would recommend doing the electronic fingerprints as well if you can. I've spoken to several people who do permits and they've told me enough Horror stories about actual ink roll fingerprint cards. Remember it's run through the FBI so if they kick it back then, it will be rejected by the Arizona permit unit. That option was not available for me when my initial permit. For the speed and the money to me it's a no brainer. I have been fortunate with actual ink roll Fingerprint cards When I did my initial application, but I feel I lucked out With the person who did mine. It could be the fbi machines Are more sensitive when they scan them compared to when they used to.

Since I am in California, out of state, electronic isnt an option unfortunately.

I went on to schedule an appointment on the site at the place nearest to my house. There was no appointment available until the next day so I called to ask if they could take same day and they just had me book the first available appointment for tomorrow and show up today with the appointment confirmation number. It took about 8 minutes and we were done.
