Same here. Interestingly enough once I had my CHL the officers always seemed a lot more relaxed in our interactions. I dunno if it was the CHL or just that I was older (30ish) when I started carrying. I've never been cited while having a CHL as well, could be coincidence. Could be rural cops discretion. Who knows.

I did not write a lot of tickets. If I was planning on writing the cite anyways, a CCW by itself wouldn't have stopped me from writing it. However, if I was looking for something further, usually the CCW would relax me. I knew the person wasn't on probation/parole, etc, and the conversation usually ended there.

There were definitely times where I did plan on writing a cite where the person's attitude made me decide to either not write the cite, make it a written warning, or write a lessor charge if one applied (like a mechanical violation).

This is not what I was told when I picked up my renewal. I was surprised by the change and even asked for clarification. It was made clear to me that I must notify the department of any contact with law enforcement regardless of carrying or not.

You just told him you are armed from the permit, he doesnt know where the firearm is. The order you told it, you reached somewhere before he know where the gun was.

          Not huge, unless something happens.
Good advice; anyone who feels differently should ask Philando Castille.

I think you are talking past one another.

He is saying to tell the cop stopping you only if you are carrying, i think you are saying you have to tell oc about the stop whether or not you were carrying.

            Make sense?

Actually if he'd had everything ready before the officer came to his door, he'd likely be alive today. He waited for directions and failed at Simon sez.

I know im probably not going to convince you, but, again, furiously reaching for stuff so you have it ready can be seen, even at night, by the officer. Ive had officers tell me that, and ive seen it during training i have had.

For me, better to use that time putting the car in park, turning on the dome light and opening all the windows.

If he wants that stuff, he will ask for it and i will force him to verbally tell me he wants me to reach for it.

Turn signal, window auto-down, pull over while pulling out papers, light on, wallet out, ignition off. Hands on 10 and 2. But the best course is to just not get pulled over, of course.

Not saying you can't get it done. I'm saying the officer is absolutely watching your movements. There really isn't a difference between reaching before and reaching while he's at the window. I prefer to have the officer tell me to open the glove box or move around.

Both times I've interacted with police while carrying, it was as simple as handing my drivers license and CCW permit and saying: "Please look at the following at tell me how you want to proceed."

One interaction was while re-holstering after shooting my carry gun at a gun range. Apparently the spot I chose to discreetly holster was a known hooker hangout This was by done by issuing agency.

Second was a traffic stop. No ticket resulted. This was by sheriff in next county that I was in.

Neither gave a crap nor inquired where the gun was.

That's fair, and I actually agree if one is one of those people who have their documents buried under the owner's manual, 57 old receipts, 4 old proof of insurance docs, a stale half sandwich from last week, a flashlight with dead batteries and 3 half full tins of breath mints then it's probably best to wait.

In my case I've prepared for this and it's no more extra motion than a smoker snuffing out a cigarette.

Did you look in my glove box?! Haha

The smoker puffing furiously on a cigarette is a red flag too! What are they trying to cover up? Or are they wanted and getting one last cigarette in before going to jail?

I've been pulled over twice while carrying since I have had my CCW. First time was Irvine PD, second was CHP. Both times I just opened windows, kept hands on wheel, when officer approached stated I was a CCW holder and was armed, with location of weapon, and waited for his OK to reach for wallet (pocket) and reg (glove box). Both times interaction was quick and very civil. Irvine PD cited (that's a given) CHP let me go with a warning.

I would venture to guess OCSD is collecting data on traffic stops as a measure of your good judgement and potentially an issue for license renewal. If you have been stopped say 6 times in 2 years, that would cause me to question your judgement. Pure speculation on my part, but other than that why would they care?

Guys . . . way too much drama. I haven't been pulled over since I got my CCW back in 2016, but if it were to happen, I'd just hand over my CCW with my Driver License, as they are next to each other, and that's it. I don't think I need to verbally tell the officer that I'm armed or where my firearm is. Any officer who has a look at the CCW will want me to proceed in a certain way, and there is very little merit in me trying to guess in advance which way that will be.
