It's not dogmatic, it's common sense. Safety should always come first with firearms. If you can't bother (or remember) to be safe, then you shouldn't be handling them at all. Period.

One word you used in both of your posts "shouldn't". I agree, they shouldn't. But, what should happen and what does happen don't necessarily go hand in hand.

It's not a matter of whether one bothers to be safe. It's a matter of things happening. To be clear, I'm not talking about pulling your CCW out in a store bathroom and forgetting it's there. In the example the OP gave, it was that he forgot the gun was on the table. This is the type of thing that I am addressing.

At this point, Let's agree to disagree.

        It shouldn't happen. Ever.

Forgetting where you put your EDC is not acceptable in any way, shape or form. Where will it be next, the mens room at Target? Your Granddaughters bedroom? The front lawn? As has been said previously, it could be a sign of something else going on, but I consider it a sign of being lazy. Yes, we all occasionally forget where we tossed our car keys, wallet, checkbook, gas bill and so on. None of those things are an easily deadly weapon in the wrong hands (yeah, cars are but not in the same manner). If you are treating your EDC the same way as you treat any of those other everyday "things" you carry around, then maybe you shouldn't be carrying a gun. It is NEVER one of those everyday things. Ever. When or if it becomes one of those "things" then you have lost your respect for what it is capable of and maybe it's time to re-evaluate.

I sort of agree. That is the ultimate F-up. Soon as I get home. It is unloaded and locked. Your right. At that point, you lost control of deadly force. I will tell my kids how to handle a situation it happens. They know I have a carry permit. I think at that point, my wife would probably make me surrender my permit and kick the guns out of the house or me. Probably both. It can easily happen. Just have to be super anal and have the mind set that is a zero possibility. Sort of like having your hot weapon laser people on the gun range. It is beyond stupid.

"We were unable to get a CCW"....Did YOU ever apply for and get a CCW? Or are you just planning to stand behind your man when things get tough?

You suggest you lived in San Diego County (ccw very hard to get) and then moved to Riverside County (ccw a bit easier to get). But your tag line on your profile says San Diego. Which is it?

What is a "typical 55 year old" male? In my book, most 55 year old men have figured out whether they have a treacherous wife (like one the writes about them and their capabilities on forums) that needs to be dumped or one that's a supportive partner for life....IF you are real, watch for the guy serving papers as you are likely getting your's next.

I call this OP a fake...in more ways than one.

Maybe...sounds more like she is pissed at him for lots of other reasons too. That can happen. Especially in a gated community. LOL.

I don't completely disagree with you, but...

OP saying he "forgot" sounds a bit contrived, just another justification for her agenda?

A few years ago I went to the Del Rey Oaks Police Department (very small) for some work related paperwork. Waited for about 15 minutes but nobody ever showed up. Laying on the counter was a Glock. [emoji848]

My slowing down is precisely why I carry. I understand that facing someone much younger than myself I need all the help I can get. As already pointed out the hubby leaving his weapon around and forgetting where he left it is a training issue. Get him some good training for Fathers Day.
Maybe is our slightly later years, we've consciously decided to retreat into the most upscale lifestyle we can reasonably afford to give us a sense of greater safety

I still like to make fun of the gated community. I see the security, some have glocks and drive SUV Tahoes that are painted like homeland defense. They have the police package. Then, the association has the CHP come into the private streets and enforce traffic. That is through a contract with the association. Then for the ones that are a real "big deal" up at the golf course, they have manned security gates and probably Zeus and Apollo sleeping on their driveway like magnum PI. Those houses look like hotels. First day of school is amusing. There is a CHP car right behind the crossing guard. Then goes up and down the main street and lights up all the Mercedes. Mothers are in tears. Then everyone drives like idiots down the hill. Sometimes, it is like watching housewives of Orange County.

I can see what you are saying and it I can see how it could be interpreted that way. I am in no way a "gun grabber" and am not advocating for anyone, including this guys wife, to disarm him. He should have the sense to disarm himself if he can't remember where he left his gun.

After getting my license, I carried daily all the time, whenever possible. Not possible was when going to tennis, to the vineyard, or the post office. I now find that I carry less and less.

Usually I'd put on the holster in the morning before heading out to work. Then drive 12 minutes to work. There I put it in my briefcase. When heading out, I strap on again, only to disarm myself when going into the post office. Coming out of the post office, I strap on again. Then I head back to work, take off the gun again and put it in my briefcase again. After work, I strap on again, drive home 12 minutes, take off the gun.

All this has become a bit of a burden, so often I don't take my gun when heading to work. I do carry otherwise though, but it's not controlling my life anymore.

Honestly, live in a neighborhood where houses are close to $1million with gates as opposed to when we were younger and we lived in a $250k neighborhood with bums. Be old fogies who don't go out late at night. Stick to a routine. We know the cashier at our grocery store...rarely ever see a strange car in the neighborhood. I can honestly say it's been 7 years since we've seen anything thats made at all suspicious.

Now if we were ever to venture out of that comfort zone, my husband would definitely be carrying. Trips to visit the kids. Night out at the movies...even when my husband drives me down to costco or we take the dog to the beach. But that isn't every day, or even every week. I would say he carries 3-5x per month on average.
