Winter CCW changes ...

With winter approaching, my Colt Commander and my Glock 22 might ride with me a little more often than my Kahr CW380, just because. I'm a bit concerned on ballistc ability of the .380 vs a .40 or .45 when meeting with thicker winter garments worn by bad guys.

I carry a P239/9 year round. Winter dress allows me the option of OWB carry.

Not to drag this thread too far off-topic, but have you looked at the Underwood Extreme Penetrators/Defenders in .380? They should eliminate those concerns about penetrating winter layers.

Of course, if you can conceal something bigger than a .380, then you probably should. Just wanted to throw some options out there.

What a change fall brings. The G42 comes out of the back pocket of my shorts and into the cargo pocket of my cargo pants. The M&P40c comes out of the lockbox under my seat and goes back to 4:00 IWB And the S&W410a comes out of the safe and into the lockbox under the seat.

Once it gets cold enough for a good jacket the M&P40c can go into a coat pocket and the 410a can go to 4:00 IWB.

I hate being less protected in the summer but since it's too hot for anything but shorts and a tee we suffer through.

I might debate the relative wound channel and penetration of the .9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP and .357 around a cup of coffee all morning long, but given the choice of any of those vs. any .380 round I would dump the .380 in a heart beat.

Now if the choice is a .22, .32, or no gun at all, I would take the .380. The .380 made it's name and gained popularity because manufactures made wonderful guns like the P238, and of course the PPK, but with so many small 9's in the same size class now???

I mean if all you have, or want is a .380 then for sure get the best ammo for it you can and carry on. But if you have a larger caliber to move up to and can get away with it.

I am still deciding, but with cold wet weather approaching I am very much considering going to my shield OWB because I layer, and moving my full size .40 S&W to the new CCW jacket we're carrying. Can carry the .40 S&W and up to 4 mags if I wanted.

Looks nice, but the thing about a jacket is once you're inside and you take the jacket off, your gun isn't on you anymore unless you transition it to a belt holster.

Was a little chilly last night here in Mission Viejo for an old guy like me. Was in the 40's last weekend camping out in Yucaipa.

My perfect temp in 72. But I start getting a little chilled by the mid to low 60's. My daily routine includes walking my two German Shepherds, very early in the morning, and late in the evening regardless of weather. A walk for them is about 2 miles.

Now my father in law who lives in Denver visits he wears shorts and t-shirt into the low 50's and thinks nothing of it.

Doheny - it's available in black, olive drab as well as the coyote brown. My last unit in stock is at Artemis (at least it was on Tuesday). If your in working out you can see it and try it on. It's a 2XL.

I would probably remove the rain hood from the collar and put it in the back compartment. I think you will like it. I will be promoting it over in the commercial section.

I have another version that is a little less tactical looking, doesn't have the electronics pockets with the pass thru. Should be in late next week.

Agree about having to move the gun, but that doesn't bother me. I can still leave the spare mags in the jacket mag pouches. As you know I usually carry a spare mag on my hip anyway, and moving my Sticky Holster isn't a problem, but I now have the option of more.

Plus it's a nice looking warm jacket. Since I am going to wear one when it's cold anyway, might has well have the option and added utility.
