Update:
App submitted 8/19
Interview & Livescan 10/20
Note: I've had a CCW in another county for at least 2 (if not 3) renewals.
I was asked questions today NOT on the application, to include:
Have you ever had a marijuana card?
When was the last time you used marijuana?
Have you ever faced military discipline and if yes, what for?
Have you ever been fired or laid off from a job? Did they claim it was for performance?
These questions all go FAR beyond anything I've ever been asked before and quite frankly, are inappropriate in as far as marijuana is legal in CA, and neither non-judicial military discipline, or job related employment termination is prohibiting EVEN IN a discretionary/may issue context.
For all our Sheriff talking about being pro CCW my experience belied that premise. I wanted to tell the Deputy (it wasn't Pinder - and he was very nice) that he had no business asking me some of those questions (again, I've had a CCW for over 6 years). But until the right is REALLY established, what else do you do?Proud CGN Contributor

I did a bit of digging into those questions because I thought they were strange myself. Take them for what you will, but the sources (attorney and sheriff dept) told me they dont care about the weed card, its just further questions to see if youre truthful in your statements as they already have the answers in front of them on their screens. Similar to prior arrests questions etc.Update:

I don’t think any of us can answer that question. I do know they want squeaky clean record. However 35 years of clean record might be fine. All you can do is try.Comment

I think we all have done some not so great things in the past. I think your biggest hurdle will be the fight, they will see it as being aggressive and loosing your cool. You just need to convince them you are worth what they will consider a risk. Time is on your side, I would be upfront with what happened, and how much you have grown and haven't been in any other fights in decades. You know you and unfortunately they just see you as what is on a piece of paper.
I would apply, nothing to loose, but that's me.Comment
