Hi all - just a quick note. We are unaffected by the Emergency Rule/ SB2 as we are all POST certified firearms instructors. We know a lot of people are going to be effected by this change so we're going to be increasing the amount of classes to help take care of everyone. If your class gets cancelled with another vendor, please keep an eye on our website as we add more classes. Feel free to message us here or email at training@sabertactics.com if you need any help.

Divine Timing
I received automatic reply that the CCW Unit will be out of the office from 12/21/23 and returning on 1/2/2024!
Oh well, I guess I won't be able to pick up my CCW until next year!
At 8:55am: I received email from another officer that she is making CCW notifications today and my CCW is ready! They will have availability at 10:00am today.
I responded thank you! I'll see you at 10am!
The officer said we should be issued a CCW card by next renewal. Meanwhile, she laminated my CCW document to a 3.25" x 2.5" size which is slightly taller than my CA ID and same width. She kept the signed copy in my file.
After living in SF most of my life, I can't believe I have a CCW and can carry legally.
Here is my updated timeline:
6/14/23 Dropped off application at SFPD Headquarters
7/17/23 Interview and Live Scan
8/25/23 Approve for LEPS exam
8/30/23 LEPS questions completed
9/18/23 LEPS interview completed
11/2/23 Approve for Training
11/18/23 Firearms training and qualification
11/21/23 Emailed training certificates to SFPD CCW Unit
11/29/23 Confirmed with SFPD CCW Unit that they received certificates
12/20/23 Email SFPD CCW Unit for status
12/20/23 Received email that CCW is ready
12/20/23 Picked up CCW
So it took a little over 6 months and $690 for my SF CCW.
My friends can't believe I have a CCW from SF! They said it's an early Christmas gift and a good one! Merry Christmas!
I will begin my 12 days of carry today before the New Year!

It?s been a long road with SF Sheriff?s office, but today was the day. I chose SO because when I applied they seemed to be making progress while SFPD was not. Here?s my screwy timeline, I?ve taken 2 classes, as I was led to believe Bay Area Tactical would be a verified class, but that never happened. The BAT guys refunded my money (hats off to them) so in the end I see nothing wrong with extra classes? heck, why not!
1/31/23 called SFSO for appt
2/7/23 dropped off application
2/26/23 took classroom portion of BAT class (guess I was a bit excited)
6/6/23 called for live scan
6/14/23 Livescan and interview
Late June got a call from SFSO about a couple legal/court matters, turns out in interview I said ?I?ve never been sued? but Deputy found a 18 year old fender bender where our insurance companies went after each other and I guess my name was attached to it.
7/23/23 call to schedule LEPS psyc test
9/1/23 online written Psyc test
10/19/23 online face to face psyc test
11/9/23 Received letter with signature approving application and requesting training
12/16/23 Saber in person training and qualification
12/20/23 Photo/sign/fingerprint/walked out with card and permit. (Told to carry both ID card AND permit I have to fold to fit in wallet)
Here?s some notes if people are brand new to this and starting this process?
Although the Deputy at SFSO has been nothing but professional, informative and polite, be aware the the SO only allows specific brands of firearms, ammo brands and calibers at the moment, and NOTHING 1911 based. If you?re a CZ fan like myself, go SFPD. If you want to carry .380, go SFPD. If you want to carry 1911/2011, go SFPD. If you want more ammo options, go SFPD. ***please check the date of this and ask the issuing agencies, I can only hope that these guidelines are ever changing. When I asked about it today, the Deputy replied ?SFSO legal is looking in to it, but there?s no changes yet.?
I?m off to buy insurance now.Comment

Completed training
Did my training and qualification with Saber Tactics. They are great. Very knowledgeable and did a great job on the qualification day. The day of my qualification they juggled 3 counties. Everything ran very smoothly. It was raining and they kept the pace up to run everyone through the shoot. Highly recommend them.NRA Life Member

Trying to track down details on the qualification for a friend who goes through it next weekend. I know it's an IDPA target and I know the distances and times but can anyone tell me what the pass fail cut off is and what constitutes the scoring (I've heard it's 20 out of 25)?
IDPA targets have three scoring zones (0, 1, and 3). Are the 0 and 1 scoring zones treated as the same? Or do you lose points if you drop out of the 0 into the 1 scoring zone?
Thanks. My friends and family disavow all knowledge of my existence, let alone my opinions.Comment

All of that information is on the proficiency form from San Francisco. Here's a link to it:
It doesn't matter which ring it hits on the target, as long as it hits on the silhouette (see the final line on the first page of the form).Comment

Just a summary of my experience. In July it will be a two year journey! Yikes.
7/2022 Called for appointment
9/2022 Appt to turn in application
10/2022 Interview with CID
4/2023 Livescan
5/2023 Letter for psych eval
7/2023 I think psych was around here.
11/2023 Hold up in my application because of an incident in 2014.
2/2024 No word, I followed up myself for an answer.
2/2024 SFPD called back and said they would put my app through and the next step is firearms training
2/2024 Received letter that cleared me for the next step (firearms training)
4/2024 Firearms training with Saber Tactics (Thanks, Ephraim and Nicholas, Vincent? and Pat?)
5/2024 Emailed Proficiency and Qualification Certificate to SFPD.
Now waiting for Chief to get around to signing or final review. I still owe Livescan and it's either Cashier's check or MO (101.00?). I'll need two proof's of residency also. No time to when I can pick up.Last edited by gatdammit; 05-01-2024, 10:00 PM.🥰 1Comment

I had to get my SFPD permit updated and recently picked it up.
Some good news:
- SFPD has started issuing small form factor permits instead of the large laminated ones. They're now issuing folks a card-sized laminated paper (not yet plastic) permit card that fits in your wallet. The format almost exactly matches other counties' permit designs. (e.g. San Diego's format). The photo is pulled from the LiveScan that is done relatively early in the process. This also means that the official issuer, the Chief of Police, is not actively required to sit down and sign a bunch of paper permits by hand. The cards are issued with his electronic signature.
- They've issued about 100 permits since I last chatted with them nine months ago. That means they're issuing 10 or 11 permits each month.
Bad news:
- The cost of the outsourced psychological screening, that is currently only required for new applicants and not for renewals, was previously partially covered by the city. It had cost ~$150 to those that applied earlier but for new applicants its now $450. Supposedly due to the new SB2 law.Last edited by charmingsocks; 05-06-2024, 8:22 PM.Comment

I'm going to send the CCW team an email to see if I can get my card form, as I've been carrying my folded up laminated copy (it's a bit rough being folded and unfolded a few times).

Update: CCW team at SFPD said they will not issue out ID card sized CCW to existing CCW holders until renewal time...Comment

Anyone know how long I should wait to bug SFPD again? Firearms training was done at the end of April (2024). It's going to be a month in a week. What's the 'lag time' between completing live fire training, sending certificates and getting called in to pickup CCW. Just curious. Another couple of months?Comment
